Hi yggep, sounds like fungus gnats. I've heard that you can make your own spray with a few drops of flea/tick dog shampoo (with pyrethins) in a spray bottle with water. I just purchased an organic spray at Smith and Hawkin yesterday for this called "Indoor Pharm" with Rosemary Oil. It's for fungus gnats and horticultural fungus, etc. The bigger question though, is what's causing the fungus gnats. Some root rot going in in there maybe? Alana

forgot to mention... I heard that putting pea gravel or something non-organic around the top of the soil confusese the adult gnats and you won't continue to attract more larve production there.

Something is in your pot attracting the gnats? Clean out the trash. Let the soil dry out for a week. If the pot sits in a drip pan to atch water overflow, take it out. Cover the soil with a layer of sand and see it these things help.

Fungus gnats can thrive in a potting mix that is too high in peat and is kept too moist. Those larvae feed on the peat, and in high enough numbers will nibble on the tender roots of plants.

You might consider adding plenty of perlite, Turface, bark fines, etc. to your next batch of soil so that your mix drains rapidly and maintains the very porous and coarse texture that fungas gnats won't seek out. In the mean time, that layer of sand that tsmith suggest is said to be very helpful.

Constantly wet/moist soil and dry, stale air, is a gnat maternity ward. Too bad we can't charge hospital fees.
But seriously, for the time being, allow soil to dry between waterings. Improve the environment. Increase humidity. Run a fan a couple hours per day, or if possible, open a window.
If your soil is too heavy, add mediums like Perlite. Also, containers that are too large, hold excess soil, excess soil means more water.

I'm not telling you what to do, but if it were my plant, I wouldn't cover the soil. Especially with moss.

Soil needs to breath. Also, if I suspected gnats, I'd keep an eye on the soil, make sure those little buggers kicked the bucket. Good luck, Toni

Toni, the idea of the sand layer is to discourage the adults from laying their eggs in the potting mix. I've not tried it, but many folks (in the gardenweb) have declared that it's one of the things that can help control those darned things. A layer of sand should be porous enough to allow for evaporation and gas exchange.

In conjunction with your (and others') hints, I think it's a good idea.

(gnat maternity ward....lol)
