more photos- & rooting green cuttings!

Last week,I cut down green branches, stuck them in pots of sandy loam soil. Now they are rooting on my potting bench outside! We're having rain- 100% humidity- 60*, they are loving it! I figure I might have a few weeks before they go into my warm basement under grow lights- I was able to carry over some branches last year & they were rooted plants by spring! I'm going to try this with all my varieties...

You can root green ones easiest if you do them like a small tip cutting and make a little humidity dome for them. I use the tall take out chinese soup clear container. Put perlite in the bottom few inches with holes in the lid and the bottom and water it well then put the lid on and watch for roots. When you start seeing them crack the lid open a little more each day until its off then you can transfer it to a little pot. You can use the little mini greenhouse things too but you might want to do it in a bright window if its really hot outside or at least in the shade. If they are pretty firm and not wimpy green you won't need to lid but use rooting hormone on the green ones. Its not too late to start seeds as long as you can keep them growing over the winter the first year.

I dust them with rooting hormone and put in tiny pots or just stick them in the edges of pots if the weather is warm with the mother plant. I have a tall cylinder clear glass that I have used in the window sill with green skinny ones and just put an inch of water in the bottom and it keeps the humidity in there with it being so tall. I made a little propagating chamber with a take out tall clear plastic soup container and put holes in the top and bottom and put a small bowl beneath it to catch the run off when I water and I can see the roots forming and slowly crack the lid more and more until I can take it off. The water in the bottom bowl provides humidity as it evaporates.

Great tutorial Nell, I'm going to try this with some of my shrubs. This method really works with perennial Asters (Michaelmas Daisies). Great way if sharing with someone through the mail :o). I usually do this in march, dig the clump, discard the center, cut the roots into small pieces that have growth buds on and either replant 3 or 4 pieces back in the hole, in 4" pots (garden club plant sale) or wash them off put them in ziplock baggies in a bit of damp paper towel and send off in the mail. I should think this should work with other plants as well. You've got rid of the soil, so there goes the weight, when the root cuttings arrive they can be potted up and grown on or planted out. This is how my daisies came from England as no soil is allowed into the country. The only other way I could have got them would have had them rooted in rock wool, this was so much simpler. Annette

WOW about all those cuttings!!!! cross my fingers that you get to root as many as you wish for ;-)

I just love the tree pictures. The color change of the leaves has always been one of my favorite things about fall.

Frances- they will! This is only the first year for most of these- I received them as cuttings last fall! I will be sending yours out in a week or two- I can't bear to cut them just yet!
