Score! Citrus $5 clearance at Lowes!

I went to my local Lowes to buy Tango mandarin, as I saw them at HD the other day but couldn't decide whether to buy one or not. Well I looked in the citrus section but they did not have any of the smallest size (are they called the bare-root size? when they are not in a regular pot?). Citrus grows fast here in CA so I wasn't about to pay $25 and up.

As I was leaving, lo and behold in the clearance section, they had plenty! 90% tangoes, a few Bears lime, navel oranges, meyer lemons, had those 3 already..wait, what is that lonely variegated leafy thing in the corner? Could it be..yes, one lone Eureka pink lemon! I almost shouted eureka too.So I only paid $10 for a Tango & Eureka. I would've paid $20 for only one, same size, at HD, and there was no Eureka either. BTW, if I go to another, larger Lowes in this same city, they would not have the same clearance items nor at this great a price. Their idea of a clearance is $2 off retail.

I can't wait to pot them up, but have yet to locate the crushed granite for my attempted Al's gritty mix.

I'm not jealous, I'm not, really..... :)

I love bargains like this I got a load of fruit bushes and a couple of citrus's a simular way.

I had occasion to go to the same LoweÂs I stopped at late last week (the one I was so annoyed at because they had nothing on sale). When I was there before I had run out of time and hadnÂt had a chance to see if they had bulbs. So I went back today with some renovation returns. Hardly any bulbs, and nothing special at all: just tulip mixtures by color, etc. Less than a quarter of what the one I used to go to would have. Phooey. This time though they had reduced small tropical hibiscus to $1. Pots are about a gallon. When I was there last week they were $4 each and still had flowers. None were blooming now but most still had buds: very healthy looking too. So I bought 3. No idea what color they are, but hey, they were a $1. I tried to pick ones that I thought might be 3 different colors. Of course this makes 3 MORE hibiscus I will have to winter inside, in addition to the 4 I have already, but hey. You canÂt buy a houseplant of that size for a $1. They had a few perennials that I know werenÂt there last week since I had gone over everything very carefully then. Not really clearance priced yet, but not expensive, so I decided to get them anyway. A Red Dragon Fleeceflower, a Black Adder agastache, and a CrÃ¨me Brulee coreopsis. I have wanted one of those for a long time, as people here have said itÂs a better coreopsis than Moonbeam, which I have not had much luck with thus far. The Black Adder looks like a much brighter blue than the agastache I have now which I think is Blue Fortune. Plus I used to like the TV show of the same name with Rowan Atkinson. So IÂm feeling a little less deprived; though not actually feeling lucky yet.

This is the clearance store for sure! I used to live right down the road and visited often... If the same lady still works there named Sue, she knows how to mark some stuff DOWN! Plants and end of season stuff like pots etc. at very low prices. Usually much better than the normal half price like other stores. I was there a few weeks ago and bought a round Stargazer Lily planter that the stems were all bent over for $8.00. The blooms hadn't even opened, so I got 7 stems of cut flowers and 7 bulbs to plant. Score! I also picked up a pot with 5-6 stems of Tropicana Canna for $5.00. There were many other things that tempted me, but I resisted! I agree with deirdre_2007, it is well worth the drive if you're in the triangle area. -Frank

Talk about not having THICK skin, right Patty?lol Thanks Andrew and I hope to come across other varieties that I have not yet seen. I'll tell you now, that if you are into fragrance, this is one you will not want to miss out on...!:-) That's a great question that I'll bet Patty could answer. I wonder myself. Sometimes the cheapest, a gift, or free thing can one of our favorites, right? You should smell the whole greenhouse with every whiff of air I take in! Every time I open my doors, whew!! It reminds me of getting off the plane in the Tropics after a long winter and just after a rain shower. The humidity, warmth, and fragrance is so heavenly. I actually took just one plant, the Brunsfelsia inside with just one flower, and the whole house smelled so good! Sissy says,' right back at ya' and sends a hug! How has little 'Ponderosa' been faring these days? Pic please? I'll bet just nice now that she can sit by the pool.lol Between you and Patty with the pool thing, I don't know.....

Fantastic find. Just to get that store to sell anything tropical that bares fruit would be a miracle. Nice Score.

We do not even have citrus up here yet! I am itchin to get my hands on more! I am pretty sure that everyone on the garden staff at my local hardware stores think I am nuts because I keep calling for an update on when they will have them in...

I got my tree last year for $10 and I though that was a bargain!

It flowered this year and perhaps may even set fruit.

I bought two $10 peach trees too from Home Depot and they fruited this year which was awesome. Tasted fantastic - I hope my tango Mandarin will produce fruit too this year!

Hah, me, too!!! My husband has just learned to roll his eyes at this point. I found a Nules clementine from Duarte Nursery. Been looking for a Nules clementine. Now, if I can just find a California Honey mandarin, I'm set for mandarins. And, I have gotten my Sumo mandarin seed to sprout. I have 3 little sprouts growing. Getting ready to move it into my new greenhouse to get it a little bigger. Then I'll very carefully separate the seedlings, and see if I can get 3 Depokan seedlings to continue growing.

Sorry about the triple post. Yes, I was very excited, but not that excited :-) Seems I'm getting some odd server issues, and even though it told me 3 times my post didn't go through, apparently it did, did, did. Still excited about the Nules, though, lol!

Congratulations!! Great buy!! Lowes can have some decent citrus. I got my Tango last year at local Lowes (Charleston, SC) for $16.00.
Last week was in Jax, Fla area on biz and stopped by a fruit stand. Bought a PonKan (mandarin) for $16.
I have to trade some of my home raised Meyers Lemons for something else...getting too many plants!!
