It is not Trichocereus/Echinopsis pachanoi. It looks more like a Stenocereus (I want to say S. pruinosis, but I may very well be wrong there).

Thanks very much for the answer but do you mean both of them? My initial first message has two other pictures (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/imgp2835.jpg, http://img838.imageshack.us/i/imgp2836w.jpg/), one other cactus that has spines.
The second cactus appears also to me like Stenocereus pruinosis, you are right.

Could the spiny one be Pilosocereus azureus?

I am very angry with the guy that sold me these cactus as San Pedro.
Yes, it must definitely be a Pilosocereus azureus, thanks Christopher. I found that it is native to Brazil in semi-tropical areas. According to this site -http://kellysnotsogreenthumb.blogspot.com/2008/02/pilosocereus-azureus.html- his common name is "Baby Toes". I wonder why.
Anyway, I have a last question. I have also bought the following cactus and I do not know what exactly is it.
Is it some kind of rebutia?

I have never seen the name 'Baby toes' applied to a cactus (not even in the comprehensive list in Anderson's book), only to (different) Fenestraria species.

And (from the same site), I've never heard anyone pronounce Pilosocereus as "pil-oh-so-KER-ee-us" :)

Neither have I. Probably the classical pronunciation (very unusual), but he is not consistent (the Haworthia fasciata page, for example).

It's true that traditional Latin didn't have a soft 'C' sound, AFAWK, but that's a mighty awkward way to pronounce that most azurean of cacti.

I agree with TJ and -R about the plants, too - I'd never buy from him/her again, that's for sure.

And TJ also has nailed the ID of that - I'd call it Notocactus scopa (I forget the form's name, as there are other N. scopa species, too)

I do not know about the name "baby toes" but the enigma of its species is solved. And as long as it concerns this baby

I have to thank you tjicken for the valuable information you gave me. It has similarities that tricked me to believe that is Stenocereus but hopefully it isn't. You are completely right it is a Myrtillocactus geometrizans. It is completely identical with mine as it has five ribs. I have read that its other name is Bilberry Cactus, Whortleberry Cactus or Blue Candle. Moreover, its fruit is edible and is a dark purple berry. Does anybody know how long does it take to bear fruit?

cactusmharris: Yes, I was taught that 'C' is always hard, but slightly softer when it precedes 'h'. The 'S'-sound (in front of certain vowels) was introduced during the late antique period and became the standard in medieval Latin. At first it felt weird to always use the 'K' sound, but once I got used to it I actually found it easier.
Of course, since botanical Latin was developed much later, the more modern pronunciation is far more common, especially as the pronunciation of the Latin words that still exist in many Western languages is based on the modern rules.

mastemot: I think you will have to wait for quite some time. I don't know exactly how big/old they must be, but I have only seen flowers on much bigger plants (this is one reason why I don't grow cereoids).

BTW, it is the red spines on your N. scopa that I envy, I once had one that I accidentially killed, and I have not yet found a replacement, most plants have only white spines :-(.

Yes it is very beautiful especially the spiral at the top. There was another three to four like mine and their price was very cheap.
Note that the genus name Notocactus comes from the hellenic and its meaning is "cactus from the north". Notos in my country means South. This is apparently because this genus comes from South America.
It has now been merged with Parodia since the name Parodia was used before Notocactus, it has precedence and all the Notocactus became Parodia.

You did mean "cactus from the south", I guess? In my lexicon (classical Greek) νοÏÎ¿Ï means south. North is denoted by different forms of the Latin boreus (the Greek word is very similar).

Many growers still use Notocactus, and I believe it has been retained as a subgenus, that is why I mentioned it.

Ha ha ha, yes I mean "cactus from the south". You are right, I was in a hurry and I made a mistake. South in my mother tongue means "ÎÏÏοÏ" and North "ÎοÏÏάÏ".
