Winter Hardy Cactus/Succulents mail order source?

Can you recommend any mail order source(s) of winter hardy cactus/succulents? I would like to redesign my winter hardy cactus garden. Also, is there either a winter hardy cactus magazine/newsletter, or a national organization dedicated to gardeners who grow winter hardy cactus? Thank you.

Dear Rootman,

Many of your questions can be answered with a "Yes".

For starters, I might suggest a visit to the vendors room of the Eastern Cactus and Succulent Conference which will be held in the town of Coraopolis, PA. Holiday Inn Airport Hotel, August 25-27. At least one of the vendors, Earth Shanty Cactus, will be selling their specialty, cold hardy plants. Theirs will be the first table I will visit.

The Pittsburgh Cactus and Succulent Club is hosting the event.

Also, there is a Yahoo forum, "Too Cold for Cactus", devoted to the topic.

Hope this is a start.

Greyhounds, where in Michigan and how soon are you going? And are you going to be able to make a trip back here to Michigan? Great Lakes Roses near Belleville (Ann Arbor area) has a fabulous selection of own-root roses -- moderns, antiques and Bucks. If you ever make it to the Eastern Market flower day in Detroit, they're there, too, and will bring your roses (AND give you a discounted price!). Nancy and Roger are wonderful people; very helpful, and I'm sure would work with you on the times if you told them the circumstances. Maybe this is an option for you? Hey: I often find plants by typing the name I want in google, make sure to use the "quotes name" approach. Forest farm (Pac NW) and Earth Works (SC?) nurseries might have one for you, unless they are charging a lot for shipping. Alternately, you could drive south for a visit, load up the backseat of your car and have a grand vacation! Of course,with the price of gas, that won't be any cheaper... Anyway, good luck. tlanci

@ cactusmcharris: I've become fascinated with crested succulents as of late & never having been much of a fan before, just never really took notice. I usually prowl ebay and Etsy for plants that catch my eye, but Etsy is expensive, not much of a deal breaker, but something that DOES give me pause, sometimes LOLL. I've come to the point where I've collected all the plants locally that I can, the ones that catch my eye anyhow and I'm now purchasing repeats =P Ebay and locally, all have the same plants that I can see, the only variation I've begun to look for is mature specimens that have interesting growth. Problem is, sometimes mature plants are on their last legs, which is how they end up on Ebay =( Finding mature plants locally has proven much more difficult. I've seen certain plants from international sellers that I *never* see available through the usual outlets & I jumped the shark this past week & considered bidding. I've ordered from Arid Gardens before but couldn't remember the name =) same with Mountain Crest. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your contributions & shopping experiences! I'll likely have a list of rooted cuttings and other small plants to give away for postage to make room, so if you're in the market, check my trade list in a couple of days =D

I am very close to that location and I am interested in purchasing hardy semps. Would they be availabe for purchase and what time will the vendors be selling?

Hi Cheryl,

I have a collection of hardy Semps and would be delighted to gather an assortment of pups from my plants to take with me to the conference. I'll email you 'off forum' with details if you are sure you will be stopping by the hotel. I plan to travel by car so bringing them should not be a problem.

I understand the vendors will be selling on Friday from roughly 3 to 6 PM, and Saturday from 9 to 5.

Cheryl, Squaw Mountain Gardens is a good commercial source for Sempervivums. Check them out; it's amazing how many they have.
