Rooted wrong end of brug cutting

Dang, I didn't realize I had the wrong end down and rooted it upside down. Now what? When it started sprouting green leaves under water and they were upside down I figured it out. I really don't want to lose my cutting. Any suggestions?

sorry, that is really funny.

I don't see why you cannot carefully cut off the small tip where the roots and leaves are and plant it very shallow .

The rest of the piece - you start over!

Sounds like a viable cutting.. just flip it over...I've done that...LOL

Gardenpoppy, whoever complained about the paypal was a fool. Waiting around for snail mail means the sender has to take care of the plant longer, which is not always easy. I have had plants I offered for postage & the trader mailed late Â they were bad & I was out of backup plants by the time I got the SASE. It put me in a bind when the person should have paid promptly. The person also shorted me $5.00 on shipping which I ended up paying for. Had the payment been paypal it would have been easily resolved. Paypal is the best way to go with plant SASEÂs, & the person was blatantly wrong to complain especially when your offer was so generous. If the person had bought online, their cost would have been much more. Sorry you are out of brugs Â I hope the offensive e-mailer does not stop you from offering them in the future.

Daniella- Sometimes my basement is just above freezing, but usually around 45*, and my brugs look just pitiful but they are still alive and not really drying out on the ends. They are going to be so happy wihen I bring them up in another month- me, too!!! Karyn- Sam was covered with about 25 small (8-9")double blossoms on a plant not even 4' tall- too cute!! Pagrdnr- Jim/Jeep posted a bunch of photos of Charles Grimaldi a while ago, sometime during the winter- had all kinds of looks! I love this brug- very fragrant, starts out yellow, goes orange then pinky-orange and just keeps going with the blooms!! This is a seedling and may not be anything special- parents are Esmeraldas x Mountain Magic. I will use her for hybridizing, tho! Check back with me later this summer! Thanks, ya'll!! Brenda Brenda

Hi SwissCanada, I bought my brug at my local Loblaws grocery store's garden center, I think near the end of June or in July. They were starting to close up shop, so it was half price, otherwise I never would have splurged. THey aren't so common here, but they are starting to gain popularity. Just a matter of time before more nurseries carry them. Down in the southern states, people can overwinter them outside in the ground. Here there is just no way they would survive. Some people over winter in basements or heated garages, letting the plants go dormant, and then bringing them back into light when the levels go up (don't let them get toooo dry though). I don't have that option, so they stay in my dining room over the winter, which does get fairly cold, and they sorta go half dormant, with the lower light levels and less watering, but not completely. They are gorgeous plants, the flowers are just incredible. The picture you posted was a Datura, which are beautiful too, but you pretty much have to treat them as an annual here. They grow so fast from seed, though. They are related to brugs. If you would like a cutting from me, and are going to be in Aylmer, give me a shout. I have a few on the go. I also have some of those dat seeds, if you're looking. There is a Brug forum here too, with some really knowledgeable people, and wonderful plants. Most of them are in the States so you can't trade, but some Canadians too. Lots of info, and people willing to help with questions!! Sam.

Hello Sandra, It is fairly easy (and fun) to propagate a fig tree. There are various methods by which you can do this. If you have access to the tree you can layer a branch by bending it to the ground and putting a bit of soil over it along with a brick to hold it down. The part touching the ground will eventually form roots. You can also "air" layer a branch in the spring. Many forum members are rooting dormant cuttings right now as pictured in this thread. Now is the best time of the year to root cuttings (branch tips). The tree may also have sprouts growing beneath it. In which case all you have to do is dig one up and pot it.....cut real close to the mother tree and dig deep so that you get some roots. Sprouts are a very easy way to get a new tree. There is a lot of good information that has already been written and can help you. I suggest you perform a search on this fig forum. Type in "rooting" or "layer" or "propagate", etc. into the search box.......and read those threads that appear from the search. After reading, ask any questions that you might have for clarification and someone will gladly help you. Dan

I think I will take that idea a bit further and create an upside down twisted brumgmansia bonsai! I can just see it now with one big flower as big as the plant!

LOL that is sooo freaky! I guess the plant knew which way it wanted to go lol. Look at all the little sprouts it put up -gonna get there one way or another :P

I am in trouble I just planted about 50 Dr suess cuttings. and i didnt think it mattered which way was up :(

Chena, it is Candida Double White. The plant is much bigger now and is one of only a very few that I grow in a pot year around...I just could bear to lose the trunk shape on it!

Oxmyx, the bonsai idea is awesome. If you do it, please post pics! I have been meaning to purposely plant some upside down to see if I could recreate this. Another experiment that I didn't get around to doing this year. Have plenty of cuttings to try it with though so think I'll go do that.

That is so cool. If I had more of this cutting I would try it. Now its between cut it in half and hope for 2 small cuttings or try in horizontally. If I just turned it right side up in the water wouldn't the exposed roots hurt it to dry out?

If it has roots plant it.....I don't think it will die becoz of that. they are VERY forgiving plants..

That stem is great! I think I'll try to do that on purpose. I wouldn't worry if some leaves sprouted under water. Like Chena said just flip it over.

I would take oxmyx's first advice, cut the tip that has the leaves and root, put in dirt. The rest of the cutting just flip over and try again. Oxmyx the idea of a bonsai
won't fly, we did one for 4 years and the blooms weren't huge. It's just really hard to keep them small!

LOL - that plant is so kewel looking!

I wish I could make one do that on purpose. Boy you'd have to tie it with something really flexible!

dweeb, you should try to braid one? Take three different colors that do good in either sun or shade and braid them together. Watch them bond together and bloom!

Karma - that was my plan with these noids - 'cept. . .

The PINK is a DWARF (grin) I'm gonna try that with some new greenies if I get them all to root.

I wanted a "tri color" - my plans were thwarted (grin) But I'm gonna give that a shot.

Some really green flexible shoots - and put them all together. But no doubt, the root system will have to be in the ground - I don't have a pot big enough to support 3 seperate root systems.

I'm trying to figure out how to deliberately get one to do the curly though - that is SO neat looking. . .LOL

What a conversation piece.

After my husband saw the pic he said I had to try planting it upside down but I wanted to make sure I got a normal plant out of it too so I cut off the rooted tip and will plant it upside down shallow and turn the rest right side up to re-root the other piece.
