PRETTIEST flower/vegetable combinations you've tried?

Hi all,

The plot for our first ever vegie garden is getting close to being ready - how exciting!!

Being a devoted "flower" lover, my aim is really to have a pretty flower garden with some veggies growing in between (& of course, for fun, a scarecrow in the middle!) - there is plenty of room.

For now, visual appeal is way more important than the amount of vegies we actually grow.

Last year I had a large hanging basket of sweetpeas and chives - grew really well, and looked fantastic. I've also tried the borage/strawberry combination in a container - that also looked lovely. I've been told that pansies and onions will do well, so I'll try that one next year.

What are some of the prettiest veg/flower combinations you have successfully tried - preferably something that doesn't include marigolds and naustriums - I already plan to use them.

Tomatillos can be grown as vines or with stakes to look more tree like. They have pretty bright yellow flowers.
Spinach makes a great ground cover and marigolds will help repel bugs, so the two together would make a pretty and useful combination.
Dark purple eggplants have lovely purple leaves that can look nice and help break up all of the green in a veggie garden.

Hi! How about purple basil by something yellow like marigolds or sunflowers?

Here is one pic I uploaded to TinyPics and saved to my documents folder: The green in the photo is way greener than it actually is in reality. So far, the established trees and native trees are hanging in there, but I don't know how. Notice the Bermuda grass in the driveway looks dead. That's how it would look in the back yard too had I not watered. I just couldn't do it all - poor things. I'll try to post the others later. Too frustrated right now. I am trying to keep perennial flowers to the border beds. I had hoped to have more annual flowers in the main beds but I need to get better at starting them from seed or it can get quite pricey. Most things had seemed to be going slowly but the heat broke here last week and now things are starting to green up more and put on some growth, finally. For me though, since the area I live in is quite brown, very little grass to speak of, just seeing a bunch of green, lush growth is aesthetically pleasing to me. I had fairty tale eggplant last year and did enjoy the colors and the eating. I did get one lone survivor started from seed this year and it now has 2 fruit. I am thoroughly looking forward to it. I grew pattypan squash before but now mainly stick with Ronde de Nice round zucchini. It is easier to stuff and the plants are a bit more compact. I may have to trade some for some patty pan though, I love the shape.

Wonderful thread, Bobby... see what your Banana Bread experience has spawned. Glad to know I'm not alone. My brothers, I'm sure, would have several "bizzo meals" to mention, as I like ingredients more exotic for their tastes (like mushrooms in my spaghetti sauce) but I think my worst was the first I served my now DH... One of my brother's had given me a variety of flavored vinegars asa Christmas present... one a "Salsa Vinegar" that I'd never tried before. I made a vinaigrette dressing, and the new BF (now DH) had forced down several bites of his salad (good boy, taught to clean his plate) before I got to my first one. One bite and I immediately removed the salad bowls from the table with "you do not have the eat this!!" It was HOT, and awful... DH says it took several more meals before he trusted that I really can cook!! LOL

Jenn, you might like Tofu, Tempeh, and Other Soy Delights, a Rodale cookbook that was published in the 1980s. I contributed over 30 tofu recipes to the book. Our tofu business made tempeh as well, but Rodale hired someone else for that section. I love tempeh, too, and was excited to find very fresh tempeh being sold at an Asian market near where my daughter used to live. She moved, so I don't get over there as often anymore. But now that you've mentioned it, I think I'm due for a trip.

This year, I really enjoyed these combos:

Purple & yellow:
The yellow blossoms of trellised french melons surrounded by light purple spikes of anise hyssop, bright orange calendula, and two-faced johnny jump-ups. The bumble bees *adored* the anise hyssop.

Green & white:
The delicate green & white striped fruit & foliage of "Fish" hot peppers underplanted with a carpet of spreading white sweet alyssum.

Hope these inspire you. Also, be sure to check how tall your marigold will get. I interplant the 6" dwarf ones & use the 3' monster as background & edging. My favorites are the 12" ones - perfect sized companions.

I keep my rose of sharons really short, and underplant them with basil

the 'thai dragon' peppers and the chartreuse coleuses balance one another out nicely

and I have a nice round pineapple sage surrounded by darkest purple petunias.
