Yes, my repotted gardenia is in the gritty mix. The signs of root rot is hard to tell, but keep an eye on the following signs: The new growth stunned, tiny new leaves not getting any bigger. Some old leaves are turning yellow but don't fall off the tree The leaves losing its shine and become dull The young leaves wilts even when the pot is still heavy or the soil is still moist. When you water after wilting, it takes over an hour for the plant to perk up Produces new buds, but the buds are not getting bigger. Sometimes, layers of tiny leaves will surround the new bug Especially watch the sign of wilting when pot is still heavy to lift. Remember, a gardenia with healthy roots will readily absorbs available water in the mix and make the pot very light to lift. And after watering, the plant should perk right up like within 10 minutes. But the most effective and ultimate inspection tool is to lift the plant out of its pot and check the root, watch the root in the lower part of the container. Scrape the soil in the bottom of the container, sometimes you will find the dark secret. Good luck.

Since gardenias soooo hate it when forced to live indoors, I'd bring it in on an as-needed basis, if possible. In containers, I'd guess that they would be safe in the mid to upper 20's. Then again, containerized plants tend to be fertilized a great deal more than those that are situated in the soil, so you might want to be even more cautious and bring them in before it gets too much under 30.

Recently planted gardenias or recently purchased ones for the inside home tend to lose buds because the environmental conditions in the nursery vary greatly from those outside/inside your home. As you will see, they are incredibly picky regarding bud formation. They will bloom in the spring and, depending on your weather, they will bloom again during the Fall. I once had them bloom during the spring, summer and Fall. But I usually only expect spring bloomage. If I get "extras", I consider myself lucky. Proper temperatures are necessary to force gardenia into bloom. No flower buds set at night temperatures above 65 degrees. Night temperature above 65 degrees causes drop of buds already formed. Ideal forcing temperatures are 65 to 70 degrees during the day and 60 to 62 degrees at night. The flowering response requires 14 hour nights. The flower buds can drop due to low humidity or a sudden environmental change. Flower buds fail to form if day temperatures are higher than 70 or night temperatures are less than 60 degrees. High soil pH can also causes lack of flower bud formation (as well as chlorosis. Leaf drop, possibly delayed, can be caused by cold drafts, improper watering, excessive fertilization, or several consecutive dark cloudy days. Fertilize monthly between Spring and Fall (stop around early September?). And yes, you can fertilize when it has flower buds if it is during the time frame above. Luis
