Wow! How many branches does your vulc have now, Karyn? I'm seeing alot more of those lateral shoots popping up on the trunk too. I'm glad to see she is doing so well for you!
Have you been using borax on the sanglings & Culebra? It might help to keep the bugs at bay.

How cool does it get in your greenhouse if unheated?

How warm would you heat your greenhouse to?

I say if it has to be heated, put it in the high 50's low 60's and keep the humidity up and hopefully you should see blooms.

Yes! The caterpillars are tearing up my sang and vulcs and culebras too. It's like there's one born every night. I pick one off one day and the next morning there is another one.

Karyn, do not put the vulc, sang or culebra to bed in the dormant stage come winter time, you will loose them. We have what appears to be vulc. from what we are seeing of the leaves and laterial growth that everyone is posting. We got these from the Portland OR nursery buyer and he didn't know what they were. We haven't see this one bloom and it's well over 6' so we wait. We have been able to take all the laterial growth off and root them. Try a couple to see if you can do so. So sorry to hear the cats
found these, we tend to treat the bed that these were in but this past year they decided to leave it alone as we gave them hosta babies to munch on.

The unheated house stays above 40 F and I keep as much as possible in there because is big, 200' x 75'. We used to heat it to about 60 F but the fuel costs became prohibitive and that was 3 years ago. God knows what they'd be now! My little 10' x 12' heated house was kept between 65-70 F last season. Plants did great but even that was expensive to heat. I'm only keeping that one at about 50 this year. I'll have another grow room in the house because I'll have to, not that I want it and that will be kept around 70-75 F with two 1000 watt HID lights. I have too many plants that need high temps year round.

The Brazilian Candles has no scent but it's so pretty and easy to grow. I love it and when they get big they are really something. There's a 15' one at the local conservatory. I've never tried propagating it but might give it a shot over the winter. Poison Arrow (12th pic) is way cool. I was told that it was a fussy plant but have found it to be easy and it blooms fairly often. The Strophanthus gratus is the one I'm having problems getting it to bloom. It's growing well but has only bloomed once this summer.

I've only treated my plants with borax twice this summer. I didn't know it would also help with the evil critters. I'll keep that in mind for next season. John the Vulc has 3 decent size woody branches and 7 or 8 smaller green ones. They are mainly coming from near the base with a few along the upper stems. I was going to wait until the lower ones put on some size then try to air layer a few.

That's what I call a set of twangers on that one, lol. Its really a cool flower. I love all the orchids too. I took mine outside about a week ago since it cooled off. Is that lemon twist? Its pretty too.

Thanks for the comments. Kasha it's 20 Mule Team Borax that you get in the detergent section of the grocery store. I was using it to help with greening up the foliage, similar to epsom salts but as a foliar spray. I didn't realize that it could be used for other problems too. Ya learn something every day here : )

What is the yellow Brug?

Some NOID yellow brug. lol I'm fairly sure the only yellows I had were Jamaica Yellow and Lemon Twist but it's neither of those. It might be from a seed I planted or maybe a cutting that someone sent? I did plant some CG x JY seeds a year or two ago. No tag and nothing written on the stem.

Ok, I might have to ammend the borax suggestion... There seems to be some debate between borax & boric acid as pesticides, & I certainly don't want to be spreading disinfo here. I guess it can't hurt, I use the boron about once a month on the Brugs, although now I also found that too much boron will kill the microflora as well... Now to find the happy medium... Anybody know if 1 Tblspn. per 1 gal. is less than 27 ppm (parts per million)?

Wow, Karyn, that's a huge greenhouse! I'd recommend the little greenhouse for your vulc & sangs, & I'm not really sure what the Culebra likes for low-end temps, but I bet it can handle your growroom just fine.
I know what you mean about those heating costs! When the greenhouse is finished I'm going to experiment with composting inside the GH for heat, & hopefully, disease prevention. I'm also putting together a bigger, better growroom this year. I've still gotta get the big lights, just got the shoplights for seedlings & cuttings right now.

I have no idea what the ratio is. lol I've heard of using boric acid to control ants. I happened upon an article about using boron on plants and it stated that they weren't sure why it worked but that maybe it helped increase the absorption of nutrients by changing the permeability of the cell membrane. I don't know who the article was by or where I even saw it, somewhere online. I wish I had flagged it to read more carefully but I was in a rush.

Karyn, I guess I am a bit behind getting thru all the threads, but I sure am glad I didnt miss this post ! I have to say you are wonderful at enabling, my list just keeps growing when I see your pictures..LOL I keep telling my daughter when she moves out in two years, I am going to convert her bedroom into a growing room...and I think by then I am going to NEED the room.

What I wouldnt give to have a tour of your garden ! I just love to see what you have growing !

Do you use the heated GH in the winter, to plant..or do you basically use it just to keep the plants alive ? I bought my first Gh this spring, but it is just a pvc pipe frame, with the tarp cover..I am hoping to upgrade once the kids are in college. Does anyone heat Gh like this..or only the ones with windows ?

Kym I have both types in the yard but only heat the one with windows because the other is just sitting on flagstone. If you make some sort of floor and seal around the bottom you can heat it. I mainly use the greenhouses in my yard for keeping plants alive thru the winter. We use the ones at the farm for starting seeds and cuttings as we have heating cables under the soil in the elevated beds.
