Jackmanni w/New Dawn

Help! I am not a very good gardener but I try! I have a 4 year old climbing New Dawn that I need to know if I should cut back now. The canes are very long and messy looking. I am trying to train it over a husband-made trellis. Some of the canes are brown and some are green. Any direction would help? Also I would like to plant a clematis to grow up it. Does anyone have any suggestions where to buy clematis in Southern CT? I saw one at Agway that was in one of those boxes that look like qt size milk cartons. It had some long green vines coming out of the top of the box. Also does anyone know of a good mail order house for clematis that sends good healthy plants and is reasonable? What do you think of the combo of Jackmanni w/New Dawn?

Do you prune the New Dawn every year in the spring when the Forsythias are out? It's a lovely floriferous rose, but I have seen it get huge. You could basically go with most Clematis colors for New Dawn since she is white (pinkish tinge?) except for, I guess, white ones like Huldine. Of course, you may want the ones that grow big too to keep up with her. Jackmanii is a good choice and easy to grow too, I hear. If you want to look online check out Brushwood, Garden crossings, Chalk hill clematis (am I OK taking names?) For descriptions of most clematis in the world check out 'clematis on the web'. Local nurseries may not always have less popular plants.

I live in zone 5 and the rule of thumb here is to trim your dead canes when the Forsythia starts to flower.

I order from Brushwood Nursery for my clems and have been more than happy. Good price,great plants and free ship if you buy more than one. Another is Chalk Hill clematis which also has a great rep for wonderful plants, a little more money than Brushwood but great plants.

As jeri said. You can give it some vitimin B-1 that will help it through the stress. Your mistake was mounding the dirt and trying to plant it like a bare root, it stressed out the plant. Next time before you plant a rose in a peat pot, water it the day before and the dirt should stay around the roots, and cut away the peat pot starting with the bottom of the pot then down the sides, take off the peat while it is in the planting hole. That is how I have planted these types of roses and I have never had one stress out on me...... B-1. Carrie

My New Dawns bloom all along the canes. But mine had been pruned back last year and transplanted. This spring their canes have not as of yet grown long enough to be attached to the chainlenght fence I want to cover with this rose. Still I see many buds forming all along the young canes which are newly emerging. For several years I grew some New Dawn Sport cultivar named "Awakening'. I let the canes ranble along a berm, and they also seemed to bloom all along their cains for the entire mid spring, summer and fall. New Dawn should do the same for you. Plant your New Dawn and keep it pruned to only the number of canes you desire to climb up the post. Then at the top of the structure the healthy canes will amaze you at how full they send out lateral growth from each cane and fill the entire stucture with blooms. Just remember to keep the canes pruned away at the base of the ND roses whereever they try to grow new canes from the graft bud and in directions away from the post upon which you are desiring to attach the canes. Even if after training the New Dawn up the post, you chosse to move the New Dawn to a different location, simply prune back the canes drastically and transpalnt it to your prefered location. They are strong growers and can handle the adjustment easily.

i just finished my first bottle and i must say, it works WONDERFULLY! i am currently doing my laundry at a laundry mat and anyone who goes there knows your clothes don't always come out looking to hot, but i am impressed. with three kids and a husband who works a pretty messy job, the stain scrubbers are really working on those stains and every load i have washed has come out stain free and smelling very good. i definetely recommend it to you.....

A few years to mature is no joke! Well, the success is mixed actually. I built the pergola and then thoroughly prepared the soil around it. I went out 2 feet and tilled to a very good depth of about 16 inches. Amended the neutral black clay with lots of cow and mushroom compost as well as peat moss to increase pH slightly. No artificial fertilizers ever as I am 100% organic (trying to be anyway). Most plants were own root unless otherwise noted. -Teasing Georgia, MIP, RU, PS were all band size plants planted in spring 2016 -Laguna was a grafted $2 plant that was about to be thrown away at Home Depot because it was full of black spot, was not cared for and looked "unsellable". Planted in Fall 2016. -FOJ, Westerland, were grafted plants doing very well in pots from a nursery planted in Fall 2016 -HK, JC were strong, 2 year field grown plants that I got bareroot, planted in spring 2015 -New Dawn was one of the 3 New Dawns that were the subject of this thread, moved it there in summer 2015 2016: RU got RRD and had to go, sucked! All others grew but were unremarkable of course. Teasing Georgia did well, putting out several blooms. MIP put out zero blooms. Laguna put out one good spring flush and then just grew after that. FOJ, Westerland, PS, were all unremarkable with a few blooms here and there all season. HK and JC went nuts, put out a good spring flush and scattered, almost insignificant blooms the rest of the season. A few blooms from ND but no much otherwise, disappointing actually. That said, Laguna grew like CRAZY and was the first to the top of the pergola (10ft up). Then following by JC and then HK. 2017: Great spring flushes from HK, JC, Laguna, MIP, TG. Teasing Georgia unfortunately got a bad RRD case and had to go. ND made it to the top of the pergola but still not impressive in rebloom or even size and not quite the "thug" I was expecting. Very odd. Repeat blooms were not good (except for TG), these plants just didn't repeat well to be worth announcing. FOJ was quite disappointing, still less than 3 feet tall. PS did deliver some repeat blooms but not much, at least it got to 5 feet tall. Teasing Georgia got huge, like 6 feet wide by 8 feet tall, nearly getting to the top of the pergola and re-bloomed very well. Golden Showers and Westerland have not grown at all. I suspect insufficient sun, but I don't know, probably bad plants. Back in 2016, I had sworn that any RRD infected rose would just be removed and not replaced. No point of throwing good money away if the darn virus keeps wiping out plants. Now I realize I miss those plants and maybe it isn't such a bad investment to replace them, especially Teasing Georgia. Hard choice, but anyway as of now, those two spots (Teasing Georgia, RU) are "vacant." Now for some pics, will have to dig into my phone!

I can not think of a blue/red/purple clematis that wouldn't go with New Dawn. I grow Jackamanii in a rough spot. It is small compared to New Dawn so maybe two plants would be needed. Better to get a second opinion on that. The box clematis will take a few years to grow in, maybe three years to flower. You might want to splurge on a potted plant at a local nursery. Around here they run about $20 or less. You will find them at any nursery, even Home Depot.
New Dawn blooms on old wood. It is suppose to be a repeater but most find it doesn't repeat reliably. Mine has only once repeated a single flower. You can prune dead brown canes anytime but if you want flowers, wait to prune New Dawn until after the main flush in June. Also choose what canes you are going to train on your trellis and cut off the rest. I've gotten advice to prune down anywhere from 2 - 4 canes from different sources. A nice reference for training roses is Stephen Scanniello's book "A Year of Roses".

I'm not sure a group III clematis such as jackmanii grown into 'New Dawn' will be a good idea. New Dawn's thorns are among the most vicious and prolific ones I have ever seen in any roses. Unless you would like to wear protective gear from head to toes when you prune jackmanii every spring, I would grow the type of clematis that does not need drastic pruning very often. I planted a couple of type II into the same arbor as my 'New Dawn'. I try to avoid going close to those murderous canes as much as I can. Too bad I didn't know anything about this or I wouldn't have grown 'New Dawn' on the arbor over my garden gate. I'll see whether the clematis will catch up with the rose this year.

The combination you are asking about is a very famous one. I personally prefer group 3 clematis with roses because of the ease of pruning. All that is needed is to cut them near the base at the end of winter and yank away the dead stems. No prissy fiddling required.
