Clivias in self watering pots?

I've been thinking of repotting my humble collection of Clivias in self watering pots... if that is a good idea? They are all in my teen age daughters room which I don't have free access to (for obvious reasons I think) so they run dry quite often... I wondering if that might also be the reason why they are so unwilling to flower.

Please remember:
1. Clivias need a 6 weeks cold break to induce flowering (constant teperature is NOT GOOD!!!
2. More Clivias are killed from over watering than under watering!!!!!!!!!!!1

maimiti, I don't think that would work well. Clivia's have thick fleshy roots, and they can't take much water, or sitting in water anyway. I sit mine in a bowl of water,(only in the warm months and when they are in a growing period), and let them soak up water all night. This is they are throughly watered. Then I take them out, and sit them in a fairly sunny window. I just give them a "tad" of water in the winter, while they are dormant. :) Arum

Experimented with fabric pots this season with pleasing results. Fabric provides tons of oxygen exchange for the roots, and air-prunes to generate even more roots after hitting the fabric. In one season, no significant growth difference observed in bulb size nor leaf growth using fabric pots, just the roots appeared much healthier & branched with no circling of roots. The main drawback of fabric pots is that they look sloppy. Advantages of plastic pots, they look presentable & I really love self-watering pots that bottom water the plants from individual reservoirs, so no chance of water cross contamination among plants nor likelihood of over watering. The bottom grid of the plastic self-watering pots also can also air-prune. So, I decided to combine both the semi-attractiveness & convenience of self-watering plastic pots with the benefits of fabric. Spring 2018, I drilled large holes into the sides of a few self-watering container and lined the whole pot with fabric to cover the holes. Took it a bit further during winter repotting and cut the fabric to fit flush over the holes. The process is relatively time consuming for each pot, so it's a labor of love. Do so in a garage or outdoors, it makes a big mess with all the shavings. After drilling, a metal file is used for smooth edges. It goes without saying, but one needs to be very careful with power tools using leather gloves and protective eye wear.

I realize SWCs are convenient, but I'm not a fan for a number of reasons. In order for a SWC to work, the soil used must be fine enough to wick effectively. Fine soils are water-retentive and the source of a number of problems related to root health and being able to provide for the plant nutritionally. Repotting from a self-watering pot

If you have a granular soil at the bottom and potting soil above that, treat it like any other plant that needs a full repot, but skip the self-watering feature unless you just can't do without it. The type of set-up you're using now ensures all dissolved solids (salts) from fertilizer solutions and tapwater remain in the grow medium where they build-up to levels that can severely limit the plant. It's better to water from the top and flush the medium when you water. Flushing the soil regularly ensures salts cannot build up, and it ensures the ratio of nutrients, each to the others, does not quickly become badly skewed and cause problems, the most common of which are antagonistic deficiencies which occur when to much of nutrient A limits uptake of nutrient B (and/or others). Roots are very forgiving, as long as you don't allow them to dry out while you're working on them. This is a Ficus benjamina repot: As you can see, more than 90% of the roots were removed, some of them as large as a quarter (of a dollar). I'm not recommending you do something so radical, only illustrating how forgiving roots actually are. Hi,

I agree with both of these posts. The constant temps makes it less likely to see a clivia bloom. If possible, expose it to outdoor low temps (depending upon where you live) of 30-50F for several weeks. Keep them dry and protect from potential frost damage. Mature ones indoors maybe need to be watered every 4-8 weeks. One of the larger growers on the cooler Central CA coast only waters 4 times a year in his expansive greenhouse. Good luck.

Thanks for your inputs. So, in spring I'll move them outdoors and see what happens. Maybe the cool days will give them a kick. Now I think it's probably too cold and there is also the risk of frost.

Maimiti- do you have a window that you could place the Clivia next to? Perhaps that would create a cool enough micro-climate to give it the cold temps it needs thru the winter.

I'd stick w/pots other than self-watering. It'll be safer and you won't have to worry about your Clivia staying wet. Toni
