Lemon tree in hard-packed decomposed granite soil

Hi --

I bought a young lemon tree which did well for a few years in the nursery can, but I transplanted it to a strip of soil along a driveway to grow tall and develop more lemons. It turned yellow and dropped leaves after I planted it, so I fed it some citrus food. Then it grew like wildfire, but it still drops yellow leaves. I've read this means it needs better drainage, or less water,a three-to-one soil of pine soil and potting soil. But that won't help the deep down roots. The regular soil it's in is decomposed granite -- hard packed. I can set the sprinkler head to water it less, but our summers in this California valley area are hot hot hot and dry and I travel a lot. Any ideas? Thank you!!!!
