Wondering what 'lowcountry' gardens mean to Carolinians? What

plants and trees would be part of that genre, and what things should I avoid?

I live in Tuscaloosa, AL and just found out my house is "lowcountry" style (from the awesome folks at the home decorating board!). I know not everything that will work there will work here, but I'd love to hear from the natives what the style really means! Then, I can start a long-term plan!

Right now, we are pretty empty in the landscape department. A few Sagos, two small windmill palms, and a few grasses/sedges. We have full sun up front, and partial/moderate shade in the back.

Thanks for your version/understanding of the trees, bushes, and flowers of lowcountry style!

Southern Gardens and lowcountry go together.

I am in the "upcountry" of SC. Lowcountry is south of Columbia.Upcountry is north of Columbia.
I love the Lowcountry and I have I have a Charleston style plantation house. I have planted cold hardy palms but basically have kept it a southerm garden with lots of Camellias, Magnolias, Gardenias, Confederate jasmine and Lady Banks roses etc.

Do a google search on Charleston Gardens and that will give you ideas on gardens.

"Start" means sow seeds in small pots or plastic cells (which come in sheets like the ones in nurseries) and grow them as houseplants indoors until you transplant them outdoors later. This lets you start plants growing that would otherwise have to wait for warmer or cooler weather. The Growing from Seed forum contains lots of good information. Try searching also in this forum and in the Growing Under Lights forum. Anything, including broccoli, can be grown in a container. Look in the Container Gardening forum, this one, and the Tomatoes forum for info about growing veggies in pots.

I find it interesting that your GT didn't do well in the heat. I have only Austins in my garden, at least 15 of them, all purchased bare root in the blazing heat of summer. Yes, there are places that will sell and ship roses to south central Texas in the blazing heat of summer. The one that I own 2 of and has grown to a least 8 ft whislt being almost completely ignored by me is Teasing Georgia. It kicks out blooms like mad in serious volume. Another 2 that do amazing in my lackadasical care is The Generous Gardener and Heritage. Heritage blooms shatter quickly and are not made for cutting but the smell is divine so I don't care. All of them do stellar in the blazing heat of Texas. They are only 2 years in ground and all are over 5 ft tall. Well, they'd be way taller but I hack them back so my dogs don't get impaled as they fly by. It's not due to care and watering either since they charge # for water use out here and we are always under water restrictions. I prune on rare occasion.

Hi I guess that might be true but by the time you invest in grow lights,hydroponic systems,even air conditioning,not to mention operating the systems, what would be the expense of a little refining for a crop at least 20 times more valuable.?? After all if it wasn't illegal it would be downright cheap .lol Note that the US is still the largest producer of tobacco and still the most valuable agricultural export last time I checked. Seems to be a bit of research suggesting that it may be harmful?? lol gary

Hi Cheryl, Here in Northern California where I live, we only get one gardening show -- Paul James' Gardening By The Yard. The few similar shows that are left are landscaping shows -- which is a *totally diferent* head from a gardening show. We gardeners are being kicked to the curb. IMO, they are keeping the G in HGTV to lure in unsuspecting viewers to think that they may find a gardening show. And while they're poking around to find that needle in the haystack show, they'll find other shows that they like and will stick around. Fat chance. I'm with the rest of you. I don't watch those channels anymore. I'm giving them until next season to put something on that interests me. After that, I'm cancelling that part of my subscription. How will they lure me back then????

I reread my post and need to clarify.
Lowcountry represents Charleston/ Beaufort/ Summerville/ Hilton Head and surrounding areas.
Between the Upcountry and Lowcountry you have the Midlands.

When I think of Lowcountry I think of fountains/ courtyard gardens/ statues/ palms/ southern gardens/ Formal gardens with sheared hedges and topiaries.

That is exactly it, at least in its usage in SC. Why the coastal Georgetown/Myrtle Beach area is not usually called "Low Country" I'm not quite sure, but it usually is not. Myrtle Beach is too new to have an old colonial-era designation but Georgetown is plenty old enough.

Big sprawling live oaks are probably the archetypical view of old-time low country.
