Protecting Plants on Cold Nights

Last year I lost a cherished hardenbergia to frost, and now that the cold has returned again, I'm wondering what steps folks take to protect their tender plants? It doesn't often get down to the freezing mark here in Zone 9 -- perhaps a half dozen times all season -- but the cold does take its victims. Every season my Princess Flower gets bitten back to the stump. This year we have a bunch of new plantings, so I'm wondering what steps folks take on cold nights like this?

I was just out spraying my small landscape with a garden hose, as I've heard the evaporation process elevates the temperatures by a few degrees. Am I wasting my time out there or is this an effective way to buy a few degrees of protection?
