Don't plant out too soon- possible frost/freeze next week

Lots of forecasters are calling for the likelyhood of frost or freeze conditions next Tues & Wed nights for much of the Southeast. I know it's that time of the year a lot of us want to get things out and growing, but it might be best to hold off, if possible, until this short cold snap is gone. Hopefully it won't be as severe as the Easter freeze of 2007.

I just heard the same on my weather forcast. Hopefully their forecast will be off as much as a few others I've heard from our Weather folks lately. I always try to hold off till after Easter, seems we always have one more cold snap right around then.

Hi ken_adrian. The guy that runs over my grey owl is a jerk. The guy that pulled out his arborvitae too early isn't a jerk but just didn't know better. None of my neighbors understand my "natural look". They're more the monoculture grass, lots of chemicals and weed killers, and dead trees types. Maybe a few yews or privets shaped into boxes and balls. A neighbor with the dead crabapple killed it with his lawn chemicals but he said it was a nuisance anyway cause he had to mow around it. He just leaves it there though, maybe as a sculpture . Yes, I live in a suburb of Detroit. No crack houses but I'd like some more land. There are a few people who have lots of plants in our subdivision but we all have to deal with our neighbors calling the city anonymously to report that our shrubs are over 5' tall. Another neighbor has her landscapers prune her lilac into a round ball every fall and wonders why she only has flowers on the side that hangs over my yard. I told her to tell them to prune in the spring right after the blooms. I tell her every year because she's 85. Neighbors reported me because my grey owl juniper extended into my driveway and scraped their cars when they turned around. The city let me keep it as is when they saw what a beautiful monster specimen it is. It doesn't even scratch, it's pretty soft. *Sigh* neighbors can be a nuisance sometimes. I had a bed of wildflowers that they thought were weeds. They weren't. I named all the species for the city inspector and they said, "fine". I didn't have to change my yard at all but the neighbors call every year. My white pine has branches and needles all the way down to the trunk. It extends over the road only at camper level though. Neighbors wanted it cut cause it scratched but I showed city inspector how soft it is and that it would have to be a camper or a UPS truck to touch it and she let it go. Another neighbor backs into it but not the trunk, just the branches.

I can only hope that we don't have a repeat of TBEF from 2007 that killed 50+ of my roses. The temps were down to 12-14 degrees for 3 days solid before they started to warm up. I hadn't done any pruning at all that year when TBEF hit. All of the new growth was killed off that year so the roses were playing catch-up all year long. I lost mainly mini's and mini-floras with just a few HT's and FL's thrown in for good measure. I don't think it is supposed to get that bad this year by any means, at least not in my area--Northwest Missouri just North of Kansas City. I have started my pruning this year and will be done on Saturday I think. If that is the case, I will be able to cover my bushes to provide them some protection from the cold. I have many 7-10 gallon containers that I will put over the tenderest of my roses to protect them. They are black, so that means that the containers will generate a little heat if the sun is shining at all. I am keeping my fingers crossed big time this year. I have some Wilt-Pruf, but don't know if I will use it on my bushes or not as added protection. What do you think?? John

So far, this doesn't look anything like last year's disaster. This is predicted to be just a possible frost. Last year was a hard freeze that lasted hours over a couple of nights. I'll cover a few things (fig and hydrangeas mainly) and bring the potted things back in, but other than that, I'm not too concerned. I did talk DH into not cleaning up the pool yard this weekend, in order to preserve the covering of leaves for frost protection.

Thanks Thonotorose, I'll try again, just keep trying until I get the ring ! My Don Juans are ready to bloom also Belinda's Dream, also several more, Queen Eliz., Double Delight, etc. and I'll bring cuttings to the swap.. I read to wrap the cuttings in wet paper-towels and put in a plastic baggie, so I'll do that the night before the swap... someone tell me if this works or if there is a better way.... I just got my PC back tonight it has been at the Tech. for over a week and I had 200 messages waiting so am trying to catch up...... a week ago Sun. I went to a meeting of the CENTRAL FLA. HERITAGE ROSE SOCIETY in Lakeland at Fla. Southern College, and Dr. Malcolm Manners gave a presentation on 'fertilizers for roses', the Ag. Agent for Hillsborough Co. was there and talked abt. the new laws for fert. use in the summer... also there was a gal who has over 900 rose bushes on 7 acres gave a presentation on PH Meters..... they had a raffle and I won a pot of "The Fairie" polyantha rose... we then went downstairs to the 'cookie-room', and a gal had brought some pastries with whipped-cream filling for finger-food..plus others had brought different kinds of cookies, etc. ... their next meeting will be at a Member's home here in St Pete, they meet the second Sunday of the month..... the dues are $15. per year and cheap at any price ! anyway, those pastries with the whipped-cream filling seemed perfect for me to bring for the swap ! sally

Was it 'O7? Coulda sworn it was last year. Suffering CRS as the years pile up.
Farmer near my other house in Matthews has had his tomatoes in the ground since mid-March using 'wall of waters'. Works for him every year for his determinate plants. I think he waits for the indeterminate varieties til mid-April when the soil starts to warm.
It's going to be so 'springy' this weekend you won't be able to get near a garden center. Hey, if these folks get a head-start on me, that's fine. I'd rather wait and be sure I don't have to replant.

Yep, it was '07, Dottie... I'm still grieving over the loss of all my hard-won azalea blooms that year!

I was at the Farmer's Market festival in Columbia (SC) yesterday... lots of folks were buying up flats of plants, but everyone was talking about '07. I'm definitely waiting 'til after Easter to put anything in the ground!

Claudia, I too was at the Farmer's Market Festival yesterday and had a blast. We bought a large dragonfly piece from the ironworks booth and just a few plants for fun:

-green japenese maple for around our pond shade
-sample of Carolina phlox, something I've not grown before
-solomon's seal
-spike moss, which looked like a neat groundcover for the shade

I'm brand new to this forum and still very new to gardening... I've learned in increments over the past 4-5 years but I'm still a newbie.

Should I cover any of my emerging perennials tonight, to be safe? We haven't put anything new in, but will the frost do damage to new stuff coming up?

Hi,
Looks like we're going to get those freezing conditions Tuesday night. I've got lots of asiatic & oriental lilies that have been growing for several weeks and are over 10 inches tall. Does anyone know if these lilies are damaged/killed by this type of freeze (predicted 27 degrees with low winds).

Hi Julie! I say the ironworks display... there were some really nice pieces there. Good luck with your new plants! If you have success with the Carolina phlox let us know... I've not grown it before but would like to try it.

OK...you're not posting, but you did cover your tender plants, and brought in those spring planters...you're a little sheepish, remembering that Easter freeze not that long ago, perhaps?...

I'll admit it, I over-prepared! Better safe than sorry, after all. =)
