RE: Dwarf Root Stock Washington Navel Tree

Sorry for posting again but I couldn't load pictures so I thought I might have to post a new message. Again, I'm not sure if this rapid growing branch is a sucker or not.

Thanks for any and all help!

This is the branch in question? The leaves look similar to the other branches but they are a lot bigger and the branch is growing a lot faster than the rest of the tree.

This is the trunk. The bottom branch is the one in question. I can't tell which line is the scar.

WoW! I'm really bad at this... I'll just post the links.
The first pic in the gallery is the branch in question. It is growing a lot faster than the rest of the branches and the leaves are much larger.

The second picture is of the trunk and the low branch is the one in question. I think it may be a sucker but it looks as if it's above the scar on the trunk.

The graft point is near the bottom of your second picture - just by the lowest ring and blue mark on the bamboo cane.
So you have a vigorous shoot that will fruit in a year or two. New citrus growth is often a little lighter in colour.
Keep feeding and it will mature to a darker green. No need to remove it if it helps the overall shape.

What Greg said (slip graft is that diagonal line you see - it's a very nice graft btw.) Thorns or no thorns will not always indicate rootstock growth versus scion growth, so don't go by that. Go by the leaves. If it's rootstock, you'll know because it will be "leaves of three", there will be NO doubt. Patty S.

Ivan, the tree in your second photo in your first posting of photos is clearly grafted. But, you're saying in your Subject header, "Dwarf Washington Navel (Flying Dragon Rootstock). Therefore, based on what you're saying your tree is grafted. And it's grafted to dwarfing rootsock (Flying Dragon). Therefore - you have a grafted tree :-) Your tree is awfully small to take cuttings from. I would wait until it has more to spare. You can root them with rooting compound in soil, and best to do in spring. Grafted trees bear much earlier, as the scionwood is taken from mature trees that have met their node count, and thus will flower for you, but you really want to wait a year to allow your tree to settle in, and develop enough of a canopy to support fruit. You can see exactly what I'm talking about with bleedingdirt's two photos (very nice tree, btw, bleedingdirt). And he is quite right - often young trees will abort any set fruit in order to develop into a large enough tree to support fruiting. I think they are both right also. No leaves look like rootstock in the first pic but hard to zoom in very far at the posted resolution. Also, get the mulch off the trunk. I think the actual trunk is a couple inches below the mulch. Perhaps use a bit of edging to give you an inch or two of clearance. I buy one piece of the 3' edging from Home Depot that costs about $2 and connects together and make one ring out of it. That gives you about a 10" circle that is great for protecting the trunk of a small tree from organic matter. No organic matter should touch the trunk of a citrus tree.
