OT: Epi bloom & fruit, Lipstick, Goldfish and others

My Curly epiphyllum's fruit has ripened. I never got to see the flower and am wondering which of my other epis pollinated it. It's one of the only ones that I think has pretty foliage but it's a mini variety.

Baby epi's and Dragon Fruit. The bigger ones are the DF. They are all covered with spines when little and look a lot like a regular cactus. The tiny ones are from the seeds that KHT sent me. There's also some baby Puyas that I started from seed. It will be years until they reach blooming size.

Brugs that have been beat up over the past couple days. Day Dreams is much lighter then earlier in the year . I'm sure it will get darker but not as dark as earlier blooms. The single pink with 2 blooms isn't a NOID. It's my Forever Morr. The single white is a Milk & Honey x NOID Peach seeds that a friend gave me.

Love all your flowers and cactus/succulents. Maybe epiphyllum hookerii on the unknown, can't see the actual cactus part so that is a guess. There are so many hybrids now though who knows lol. I love stapelias but the ones I had smelled gross lol. That first fruit looks like a dragonfruit, I heard epis could pollinate dragonfruit plants not sure about visa versa.

Marguerite: I agree: 'Til or if they flower, who knows? :-) Whatever they are, they look very nice. Here's the go-to answer on how to distinguish Columnea and Aeschynanthus. Also, Columnea leaves alternate whereas Aeschynanthus are opposite each other. I think Toni asked me this question some time ago and I forgot to answer. What do you mean? All the words on the collage used at least once? OK let me see if I can clarify the mistery: I made a collage with 25 pictures. Each picture has a name on what you see in the picture. YOUR job is to find the right word to each picture. You only have to write a word ONCE!! Then next time you post, you can use totally new words. Your goal is to get as many words matching the collage words as possible by the 18th. I keep track of the correctly guessed words of each one of you. Tonight I will tally up the scores after everone has posted...speack midnight lol. Do any Gesneriads attract hummingbirds?

Here in Northern California the hummingbirds love to visit outdoor nematanthus. When they are active, they often pollinate many of the flowers, resulting in many bright orange seedpods, which, from a distance look like flowers. One of our club members, Celine Chase, showed us her Nematanthus gregarius, with "berries"* at nearly every node. It was beautiful. Not all nematanthus make orange seedpods, N. fissus makes these interestingly shaped and large yellow fruits, with undulate ridges, like little hands. *As the late and much loved Maryjane Evans pointed out to me, Nematanthus do not make berries!--they make fleshy capsules (they have seams). Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Barb! look at all of those flowers! Those violets are pretty but they are a real pest here! spread like wiregrass! You really make me miss tulips too! (I knew winter was good for something!) Is that a trillium at the top! I can't remember the last time I saw a trillium!I am sorry to hear that Al has pain, I have suffered from hip/joint pain for several years, the doctors have told me the best treatment is 'keep moving' grrrr, sometimes it is very tough to do. Regina I am happy that you are getting some rain! (I hate to complain about water from the sky but it is still raining off and on here! The plants are loving it, but it sure makes it unpleasant outside (muggy, mosquitos and soggy) That Brug is beautiful! I can't wait till mine bloom, I have 3 potted and one in the ground, I just love those leaves! Even if they didn't have flowers My elephant ears hit the ground running too, all this water really perked them up. I cannot believe the size of the leaf on one of them (Is it my imagination or are those leafs still growing?!?!) I have a couple toad lilies with speckled foliage but none with green and white leaves. The fruit does look a little like a dragon fruit but it's only about the size of a walnut. The seeds are also bigger and sort of kidney shaped. The inside of the fruit is different too. It's really mucilaginous, like a puddle of phlegm. Blech! None of my DF bloomed this season but I've also heard that the DF and epis can cross pollinate. I wish that I would have seen the bloom on that Curly epiphyllum.

Always a wonderful journey thru GH! The Vulc and Cluebra are looking good. My Vulc. has been it the house since I got.. I'm to scared to put it outside.. It is still almost 90* most days...It has put on a couple of new shots.. Very HappY!!!!LOL

I realize that I have a LONG long way to go to reach my goal when I just looked at your wonderful selection and just gorgeous varieties.

I know it takes time to take just the right picture. Upload it...name it. I like to thank you for sharing them with us. KNowing how much we love to look at pictures ;-)

It is always a treat to see what is blooming in the greenhouse now! And that dark pink brug hit me in the face with it's color- WOW! My one Adeline blossom looks like yours. It is huge- are yours larger than a regular brug too?
You sure are dedicated, too, waiting years to see blossoms. I have a few amaryllis like that and an Aroid Titanum, which may survive my care and bloom in five years! Can't believe I was crazy enough to buy that!!

can you eat the fruit? I love all your plants, they are all so unsual. I wish I have a green house, i would love to collect unsual plants. Thanks for sharing your beauties.

Karyn, beautiful as always. I love the Stapelias even if they do stink.

Gotta, How big is your Aroid? Voodoo's really seem to like my soil & the tubers grow from tiny to huge in just one season. I want to get a titanium, they are so cool (oh boy, another huge plant to lug in & out).

So far I've had 3 varieties of stapelias bloom and none have been stinky. I was expecting them to smell like my Voodoo lilies which I made the mistake of planting near my front door when I first planted them years ago. It was horrible. It smelled like I was hiding a corpse in my foyer! lol

I don't think that epi fruit is edible. It does have a slight sweet scent but the texture is just too nasty to even think about tasting. I'm not even looking forward to separating out the seeds.

I grow a bunch of plants from seed that take forever to bloom. It's just so cool when they finally do flower. My problem is that I grow a little bit of everything and some varieties more then a little bit. Space and my utility bills are a big problem in the winter.

I've always grown tropical plants but when I stopped working my collection really got out of hand. Just ask my family. lol

What a wide variety of plants. I would love to see an overall view of your garden. It must be spectacular. Love all except the gelantis (sp?) looking goo fruit or seed pod. Never have seen a goldfish plant. The first one really does look like a little fat goldfish.

Your brugs are still pretty even though they have been wind whipped. The double (Daydreams?) is a very pretty one.

Lovely, lovely, lovely...thanks for sharing with us all of these wonderful blooms.
