Goldfish plant not blooming
Comments (7)I was reading the posts, and this one caught my eye because my goldfish plant is biting the dust. UH HUH, humidity! Well my question is answered. Lots of light, water, but here we go the darn plant is in a window, with the heat vent under it. What is so crazy I switched windows, to help this poor pathetic plant, and it got worse. Where I had it hanging it should have done great. I have a Hoya hanging in that same window, it blooms. Oh dear I am doing something right with that anyway. I love the goldfish plant, and I will try one more. It was beautiful when I bought it. The cashier said she was having the same problems as me, not that I was happy hers was doing badly, but I didn't feel alone....See Moregoldfish plant
Comments (26)How funny...I came here to learn about goldfish plants after just seeing some for the first time in years & Lilpanda only yesterday was looking locally for a store that carries them. Home Depot in East Palo Alto (101/University Ave., by IKEA) had about five goldfish plants in stock earlier this week - hanging in the plant section inside the store, on the aisle that's closest to the outside garden center. Listed at $18.99 - which might sound pricy for a houseplant, but this is one that (in addition to being hard to find) is completely foolproof. I got one as a gift 20 or years ago, & it's hardy, healthy & has happily continued on, no matter how little attention it gets. (I think it's actually still in its original pot.) It's understandably a bit branchy - but I now know that's an easy thing to fix. p.s. HD has a 10% price beat guarantee policy, so if you go there by 7/1, bring along an Orchard Supply ad, as they're having a 25% off all plants sale this weekend....See MoreWhat is on my Goldfish plant?
Comments (4)I am the furthest thing from an expert, but I say mealies in the first one, but then after seeing the second, it could be spider mites......I see a white thing on your leaf in the first pic.....I just found mealies on one of my plants, and it was pretty impossible to not see the bugs, after I noticed them. Spider mites make webs, and are very very tiny, I have had those too....they are like specks in the webbing, but they are fairly easy to see as well. Good luck......my plant infested with mites went to the garbage, the one with mealies got sprayed with Malathion (outside), and I have since left it outside, but I have not seen anymore mealies. Comments (3)Coyle - the standard mix for gesneriads is peat, perlite, vermiculite 1:1:1, plus to be even better - a bit of crashed dolomite to off the acidity, microelements and horticultural charcoal. It is hard to say how much dolomite because the peat moss acidity can be let's say 3.5-4.2 Ph and you want to end close to neutral. You can order premade mix from vendors - look at avsa.org or gesneriadsociety.org "vendors" - just to know how what it should look like. It depends how you grow them - I grow practically everything on wicks- so I need light soil. If you bottom water them - you can go heavier - - more vermiculite than perlite. A very good way of growing Nemathanthus and Columneas - is in Oyama pots. I add even more perlite to the basic mix for Oyamas. These things make watering really easy. Irina...See Morebirdsnblooms
