sour orange uses?

We have a very full sour orange tree out back, and I'm wondering if any of you have recipes you like to use them in. They're way too bitter to eat raw.

I made orange marmalade, and it was, well, SOUR (I only put in a small portion of rind too). Granted, it was my first go at canning/jam making, so it could've been a mistake on my part...

momma, if you type in the words SOUR ORANGE into google (or similiar search engine, you'll come up with lots and lots of pages of yummy sounding recipes.

Glad to mention it. I told Jim Dennis at Bakers that I'd post about them. He said I bought the first one! LOL They have some really nice specimens. I tasted the fruit and it is like a sour orange. You can make Bergamot Curd which is like lemon curd.

Try this for starting your research. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_orange You might have better luck searching for Citrus aurantium. Bergmount or Seville are the two best known varites of this type of orange. Searching for those types should make it eaiser. Good luck. Here is a link that might be useful: bitter orange

A: No. The sour orange is Citrus aurantium. It is also known as the Seville orange, famed for its use in English marmalade. Sweet orange is Citrus sinensis, an entirely different species. Sour oranges will always be sour, and sweet oranges will always be sweet. In areas of the world where tristeza virus is not present, sweet orange grafted to sour orange rootstock gives sweet oranges of exceptionally good quality. But the tristeza virus has made that combination rarer and rarer, recently, since it kills the trees. Sour orange can be grown as a scion, but its fruits will always be sour, regardless of the rootstock used. Information Provided by Malcolm_Manners

My dad's cousin said, "The best use for sour oranges
is to make a whiskey sour." This drink is made by
bar tenders into a third rate drink by use of lemons.

Of course if you live in Texas they make great root-
stock for grafting your favorite other citrus.

Dear Momma,

Your sour oranges need sugar, lots of sugar. Unless you use them to garnesh like a lemon or lime, use plenty of sugar.

I would love to grow another sour orange. Would you send some seeds? They need to stay wet by using a swatch of paper towel in a baggie or wrapped in cellophane. Thanks. I will make good.
