Visiting Charlotte NC in May
Comments (9)Well, mikey..you missed the azaleas and the dogwoods we have in abundance. Azaleas were very fine and long blooming this spring thanks to an oddly long spring. You didn't say when in May for your visit but if it's soon, you'll want to bring along hats. The loopers (inchworms etc) are raining their poop on us from up in the trees. Another week or so they'll be a non-issue. The roses are forming buds now (inchworms love them) and the garden centers are full of customers eager to plant before it begins to get hot. Hope you have a lovely trip. ....See MoreButterfly Weed near Charlotte NC?
Comments (13)I live in Charlotte and my butterfly weed has not emerged from the ground yet. I have gotten it in the last 2 years at Kings nursery. There are other nurseries that also carry it, but they will have it closer to June, not now. There is a butterfly garden mail order place in NC called Niche Gardens. They have all sorts of plants to attract the bf's and hummers. You can sometimes find pots of it at the UNCC plant sale and Winghaven sale, as well as out to Daniel Stowe. Since I have increased the amout of milkweed and other plants, I have really begun to draw in the Monarchs!...See MoreConsidering Move to Charlotte NC have questions
Comments (16)Honestly, I don't understand the Charlotte-bashing that has become such a popular hobby these days. Especially not coming from a place like Union County, which seems to be living on the reputation it had 30 years ago. Unfortunately, in 2006 it's exurbia-on-steroids. Fastest growing county in North Carolina, meaning developments are popping up faster than toadstools and the infrastructure is strained to the point of collapse. Last time I was down there (having driven no faster than 15 mph in the gridlock on Highway 16) I drove past a dead deer carcass lying at the edge of a Target Superstore under construction, in the middle of what used to be fields and forests, and that kind of summed the place up for me. Charlotte will be a good fit for you if you need culture in your life (excellent opera, symphony, ballet company, several theatres) some actual gourmet and/or ethnic food now and then (we are not talking Macaroni Grill, ok?), and the hustle and bustle of lots of different kinds of people. Best of all, the city is well-known for its beautiful gardens, and there are many gardening groups and public gardens to become involved with and learn with. You should check it out....See MoreNew Pool in Charlotte, NC
