What to grow in winter in window boxes?

I am new to container gardening and gardening in general as I never had my own to work with. On my partly covered patio in my condo, I have several containers. For the last couple of years in the window boxes, I have put annuals in the spring. These have done ok for the summer and are almost completely gone by this time of year. I made the mistake last year of planting more annuals about this time of year and they really did nothing but die within a couple of weeks. So, I just left window boxes empty until spring and then planted more annuals.

I would like something out there, preferably with a bit of color, through the winter months that will actually live through our mild winter months. I'm in Fremont, this is on a partially covered patio with partial morning sun for a short time. I don't bring plants in or cover them if it gets a bit chilly, so they would have to make it on their own with however cold it gets around here. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!
