Having read EG's blog and living in the same zone in NC, I know that 5.5 hours is plenty of sun for plants in our areas. My perennial bed gets less sun than that and has performed well. The heat lingers so a little shade actually helps. Since you're shopping seed racks, some good wintersowing candidates would be black eyed susan, shasta daisy, echinacea/coneflower, salvia (purple perennial type), red hot pokers, Achillea, Blazing star, Columbine, foxglove, painted daisy. These are perennials and some won't bloom til their second summer. So I'd mix in some annuals like cosmos, African daisy, zinnias, marigolds, and sunflowers. Cosmos will bring in the bees which your veggies will love. When you plant squash (and I know how you love to squish those bugs), plant a couple nasturtiums in the same hole with the squash and zucchini plants. The squash bugs don't like nasturtiums. You'll have to spray less. Any type will do. If you trellis your vines, the nasturtiums can climb a little too. Marigolds are good to plant with tomatoes. Basil can be planted there also. These are companion plants that will help each other and might improve the flavor. The seed racks really don't have many choices for perennials. They mostly sell annuals and veggies. A google search for first year blooming perennials might be in order.

You seem to have stumped the RMG members, kimkitchy. I know little about nasturtiums. They are tasty and pretty and underutilized ... Your question reminded me of the technique an old gardening neighbor had for low growing vines that he wanted off the ground. He bent cattle panel fencing at 90 ° and laid it over the plants. It isn't what you are talking about and seemed to me that the old fellow showed a good deal of resourcefulness to have bent that heavy wire so precisely! I'm wondering how much the closeness of the other vines, and their shade, encouraged the vining of the nasturtiums. Steve

Summers, what a beautiful aesthetic for your house! I love the Tudor look! I think the modern stuccos have all sorts of polymers added to make them more durable and tolerant of a wider range of weather conditions. The traditional stucco of desert regions is just sand/cement and the color is added to the stucco so you don’t ever paint it. It will last 100+ years in a dry climate with zero maintenance. Usually the the cold climates don’t put stucco down to the soil level because that’s when water wicks up and snow piles against it and it gets damaged. You see most stuccoed houses in SoCal are stuccoed down to the ground and last forever as long as no one has been pointing a sprinkler head at the bottom two feet where stucco touches the ground.
