I told the same thing to this little guy just now as I was shining the flashlight in his eyes

I don't know what Euphorbia this is, but it occasionally seeds, though not to any great degree. It is unfussy and tidy, and provides a nice foliage contrast to the other plants in this bed. From Late May 2014 False Solomon's seal, Smilacina racemosa, volunteered here, probably from seeds in the soil we moved in to level off the bed. I like it at this time of year, but later in the summer it gets a bit ratty in the sun. I need to move it to a shadier spot where it will remain ornamental when the weather heats up. From Late May 2014 My Halesia is fading now, but it while it is blooming the bees love it. This one is more of a shrub than a tree because it froze back to the snow line several times when it was young, so it has many low branches. From Late May 2014 The bed along what was an old barn foundation. From Late May 2014 After a rough first year between my neglecting it in a too-small pot and the voles noshing on it over the winter, this Leucosceptrum japonicum Gold Angel is glowing this season. It reminds me of a golden coleus, but is perennial. From Late May 2014 At DH's shop, the redbud and a Viburnum burkwoodii bloom at the same time. The underplanting of woodland phlox hasn't gotten large enough to show yet, but I am hoping for a haze of lavender under the redbud in future years. I'm a very jealous mole seeing all your glorious gardens. My gardens took a double whammy hit this August. First, the heat/dry conditions which affected so many things and then --- on a very positive note --- my daughter, who lives in France with her family, has been here for a month. It's great to spend time with grandchildren --- the gardens played second fiddle to my family for sure this year! So --- no photos from me but many compliments and plants that are going on my 2014 Wish List. Where to start ? T2D, I love that darling Anemonopsis macrophylla with her shy blossoms. I have the later fall Japanese Anemones, which spread like mad. Does this self seed? Bill, I, too, really admire your stonework and the garden areas you've created. I see your Portulacas are running flush like mine, which self-seeded from last year and are all over the gardens. I love the Crocosmia (had one years ago) and that Hesperaloe parvifolia, two plants that I'll have to search out for next year. They both make beautiful statements. Is that Lithodura beneath it? I was inspired to put some in after seeing yours. One clump died but the other has spread over several feet. Claire, my sedums are still green, but my Phlox 'David' is still standing tall. I'll have to cut back many of my others because of heat stress. I also admire your Frans Hals --- looks as if it's not been bothered by the heat. Franeli, I love the combo of Casa Blanca lilies with --- is that Verbena bonariensis in front? And stack316 --- yours are those interesting doubles I've seen online and in catalogues. Sadly, my lilies are done for the year. Persimmons --- your "volunteer" nasturtiums are adorable --- cherry brightness! Maybe I'll plant a patch of those around the telephone pole in front of our driveway next season. Everyone's gardens are so inspirational. Keep posting, please!

Unique is good, especially if grown for Aus conditions. With larger land areas there should be the opportunity to grow in larger numbers, and have far more to select from. Sandie, if you are talking "garden names only" then fine apart from the problems Lozza points out. I have bought some 100 roses over the last year, but would put greater value on the 2 BB's from you (growing well and not excessively) and the 3 pinkies from Robyn (all grown from cuttings) and my babies from rugosa scabrosa which are very tiny still. The personal touch is important to a lot of gardeners. It wouldn't be good though, if for instance, a Mrs Austin acquired one of your seedlings to name after her new baby Jayne - LOL. It might interest people that Fred Danks was one of the people who contributed greatly towards the development of the Pacific Coast Hybrid irises, having crossed various PC species from the US. He was so harsh in his selection that he never introduced one of his seedlings, but did share with other hybridisers, including sending seed back to the US, from whence many of the new varieties sprung. OK - that's irises again, but we have a great history of Australians who have contributed to the production of quality plants for our gardens, and who have probably not benefited to any great extent financially, if at all.

Moonlight Magic set my heart singing today. Brought home a pair from Lowe's this Spring in bud & bloom. Strong & vigorous plants, free from black spot so far in hot & humid no spray conditions. The silvery lavender color caught my eye, but leaning in to sniff the blooms sealed the deal. Repotted to 5-gallons, they've grown & bloomed very well. HMF says none to mild fragrance, but ratings & comments say otherwise. I give it a 7 of 10, redolent of old rose damask & fruit. This rose has thoroughly charmed me. Good morning, Lucy. That is such a sweet picture and a nice surprise today.

A perfect message for today as this is the day I put weight on my right foot for the first time in six weeks and really begin the process of getting back on my feet.

Shirley, so how is it going? you know we are all crossing our fingers and toes that you are back on your feet as you want to be!!!

I think it is a gold finch. The parent birdies were hanging around with the wild sunflowers all summer long.

the only reason I use a flashlight these days is because of all the ant hills I try to avoid rofl

Lucy,

It's going great. I'm relaxing now, but have been getting around pretty good. I have to stay on the deck for a while when I go out back because we have a sloped yard and DH will worry about me too much if I don't stay on the flat surfaces.

I'm really pleased with the progress today. Thanks so much for asking.

The brugs are UNDER and in front of the shrub where all the birds hide out in all the time :-)
