I have never got along with anyone name IKE ever.

He keeps coming west. My insurance renews ever September 1 every year. LOL Time to triple check to make sure windstorm was renewed.

This one is a rip it to the ground bad. I am holding my breath.

This is like the hurricane season from a few years ago, one after the other. I hope Ike doesn't cause any problems for you.

Since this thread is about mountain lions in NY I will repeat this post here---November 2011 I saw a large dead red cat on left shoulder of Southbound I-81 just after the Whitney pt exit. The face was rounded-a cross between a raccoon kind of face and a domestic cat.-sweet/round face very long rope like (thickish) tail w.straight fur-curved around towards the front- height of a St. Barnard but thin build like a Dane. The legs were long. The color was solid orange red. I was traveling at 65mph and by the time I had processed what I saw it was too late to easily pull over. I was very surprised. I posted a description of what I had seen on Topix in the hope someone else had seen it and could let me know what it was. All I got was a few snide comments. Then I found this: "05-05-2011, 06:48 PM #1 Crokit crokit Join Date: Dec 2010 Posts: 158 Mountain lion sighting First, let me state that I have all my faculties, excellent eye sight, and am not given to exaggerations. Today, while traveling south on Interstate 81, between Syracuse and Binghamton, I saw a Mountain Lion / Cougar/Panther, pick your noun.!! 100% positive, absolutely no doubt. There is ZERO chance that it was anything else. The only other thing it could have possibly been ( other than a live mountain lion/cougar/panther ) is a full body mount of a mountain lion/cougar/panther and someone pulling a prank. It was less than 100yds off the West side of the road, sitting on top of a section of rock/cliff that the highway had been cut through. It was sitting on it's haunches, leaning forward, ears forward, looking down onto/across the highway. It was about 30-40 feet above the highway. Just before the " Castle creek 1 mile " highway sign. When I screamed " holy F%^K, a mountain lion, scaring the S#$T out my buddy who was driving almost lost control at 75 mph. An absolutely beautiful animal, well muscled, excellent specimen. Up until now, when ever I've seen reports of sightings, I've taken them with a grain of salt. No more! Anyone know of any other recent reported sightings in that area? Wldnerness: Can you put me in touch with any of the state Dec/Rangers/etc from that area?" And my post on Topix was as follows: Justwondering East Syracuse, NY 1 huge red fox, moutain lion or lynx on I-81 (S) near Castle Creek Nov 9, 2011 Did any see a dead huge cat like animal on the southbound side of I-81 about a mile closer to Syracuse then the exit for Castle Creek. It was on the left lying an its side, obviously dead and huge. If you did see it, or heard someone else talking about it, what was it? It looked like it had a body like a mountain lion, a long tail with long fur-not bushy and a face that was rounder like a lynx.Its color was pretty uniformly red-not mixed or strips or anything like that. I was moving too fast and, once I had processed what I saw, I had gone too far to see it. Apparently someone picked it up, probably for its fur, because it was gone soon thereafter. I saw it at around 10:40am Tuesday morning. If you did not see it but are familiar with the wild life around there, any ideas? Any information would be appreciated. Hunters and Wild life experts,(to those needing to be sarcastic, save it), what do you think? These two sightings are at identical places. I do not believe that they are both mirages. Also, if the one I saw was young--it would not have been as visible to a driver on I-81 6 months earlier. The one I saw was not so big that it would have been very visible to drivers if it were on the top of a hill. That means that the one I saw could have been the adolescent offspring of the one seen by the earlier poster. If so, maybe there is a den nearby. I know exactly where I saw the dead animal so a wildlife person or ranger could easily investigate. If the other poster saw the parent in May and I saw a dead adolescent one in November I bet that there is one that has set up a residence in the area.

The "air gap" is the "cavity" part of a "brick cavity wall system" and is the horizontal distance from the back of the brick to the face of the sheathing. Regardless of what any building code says (see the link below for why the IRC and the earlier CABO codes have long been a very poor guide to brick cavity wall construction) it should be obvious even to an inexperienced designer that the cavity must be left open and unobstructed to allow these two different wall materials (brick and wood) to move independently or the brickwork will crack and it should also be obvious that water that inevitably passes through the brick must be able to run down the back side of the wall to the weep holes at the bottom of the wall without being blocked or transfered to the back-up wall by mortar bridges, filled cavities, or improper brick ties. It's not difficult if you remember that the brick expands when the sun hits it and water runs freely downward unless interrupted by bridging materials. It is physically difficult to achieve a good brick cavity wall with only a 1" cavity because there is so little space for the mason's fingers and trowel therefore mortar bridging is virtually assured and a stainless steel tie might not fit. I strongly recommend a more abrasion resistant house wrap like Tyvek Commercial Wrap or even Typar. If the brick shelf is only 3 1/2" deep at the foundation and the brick is a standard 3 5/8" width and a minimum 1" cavity is maintained then the overhang of the brick at the foundation would be 1 5/8" with only 2" of the brick sitting on the foundation. If the cavity is 3/4" then the brick would have 2 14" bearing and a 1 3/8" overhang. It's not impossible to build but it does not meet time honored industry standards like those from the BIA. One thing you can be sure of is that there is no room for installing insulation in the cavity. The contractor just won that argument. If the contractor insists on using galvanized corrugated brick ties be sure they are initially installed pointing downward so they will be bent outward as well as downward to contact the top of the brick course thereby avoiding a water bridge or the need to twist the tie 180 degrees which can damage the house wrap. Alligators scare the snot out of me. When I visit my relatives in Fla. I am always on the look out for alligators in the canals. My brother's place backs up on a pond (swamp) where some have been sighted. I haven't heard of any more mt. lion sightings but not doing as much outside work. The summer garden is winding down, though it is getting time to plant the winter/fall garden. We use to find lots of black widow spiders when we first moved in. The horse shed, which later became my garden shed, was full of them as was the garage. Both places needed major cleaning. The previous owners were a little strange, another story another time. Sort of hoarders. We keep the place neat and tidy with snap lid containers in cabinets so don't seem to get them as much anymore, though there was one in the corner by the front door. Keeping my fingers crossed for you Jim. I was just going to post something to all those in Ike's way in a new threat. I should not sit here after waking up and not being able to see right lol. I read your subject line and I thought it had to do with animals lol. Having just looked at the spider one lol. Cause my thoughts were not on IKE....I read something like yikes ...

So on the serious note I pray that everybody has no harm happen to their lives.

Got to check with my daughter down in FL. But she is in Orlando so last time she only had trees ripped out and some minor water damage.

jim,just heard on NBC nightly news,that it'll hit between houston and galveston.we lucked out here for the german guy.got litteraly nothing,although i'm not complaining.wish IKE would just go away and no one would have to worry.how for down on the coast are you from galveston?my brother just bought a nice place in SURFSIDE,has two other properties for sale there,says he hopes all that flood insurance pays off. best to you jim.

Jim, you know you have a place to go if need be. I wish my family had come here before Gustav. John's two sons are in Houston. They better come stay with us too or at their Moms. Best of luck to anyone in Ike's path and will say prayers that is stays weaker.

Jim, I have never even met anyone named Ike. But we are going to listen to the weather channel tomorrow and if it is heading our way, we are going to the coast, and try to save what we can. I have decided that everything happens for a reason. When the yardmen cut my brugs to the ground weeding, this is the anwer. I will cut all my plants to the ground, this is the only way I know to save them. I have taken off two days so we can do this. I will cut everything to the ground. I know they will come back, I know this is the only way to save them. I am not worried about the surge,we are 6 ft above sea level. I am worried about the 100 plus miles an hour winds. Sad, we were going to rent out the house on 10-1-08. Jim, I hope you are safe. Barbra,

I hope they are wrong. 4 of the 6 models show it coming right over me. I am at 30 ft elevation.

Barb, I have not figured if to let them fend for themselves or cut them. It will be a last minute decision. Give me a holler if you are coming down or email me. I know a back way out of here depending on Ike's direction. No traffic and only corn fields and 70+ mph.

Thanks for the good word everyone. They have been wrong on this one so much. Maybe it will hit some unpopulated area of Mexico.

Jim, we are going to leave to go down in 30 minutes, we are waiting for the traffic to slow down, before crossing town. We will come back thru Goliad, Cestahowia, and Falls City. IH37 has the hurrican lanes open as of this morning, but we are not going to use Ih37, because we are brining the boat back. I do not have the option to wait until the last minute. We will come back tomorrow morning. We have a long day ahead of us, boarding up windows, and tying everything down. I have over 30 mature palm trees, I hope I do not loose them all. Barbra,

Jim, during Rita we were evacuated and couldn't return to our house for almost 2 weeks due to the flooding and waters not receeding. I saved many brugs by doing this:

Get a few small trash cans (like the ones used in the bathroom) or tall square plastic tupperware-type containers. They make some squarish larger types that are taller. I took a few cuttings off each of my favorites and bundled them all together. Then I placed them in the containers with a few inches of water and wedged them in my car with everything else. It gave me a little peace-of- mind during the whole thing lol. You could prob do the same with a small icebox-just change the water every few days and keep out of the sun.
We had 3 kids, parrots, dog, cats etc. and most of those cuttings made it. The ones I left in the yard, mostly drowned or eventually rotted. Some in smaller pots I put on the table in the house and up in high cupboards in the garage.
I would just try to save the 'special' ones the rest you can worry about later.

Jim I am bringing the two you gave me in the garage so they will be safe. If you need them back later I will send them to you. I will be saying a prayer for all of you and if anyone needs a place to stay we are far enough inland that we will only lose power and have plants blown around so I am bring everything potted into the garage. The rest in the ground will have to make it the best they can. I told hubby we should have already got a generator just in case. Now I can't find any in stock already.

I'm a little inlands but they still have estimates up to 60mph. Hope I don't lose either of the two trees I just planted in July :( One of them is already starting on making a single apple (I almost killed that one from lack of water too!). All the pot bound stuff can just be moved into the Kitchen.

Neither seemed to have a problem at 30-35mph in August. I'll just have to stake them up real good and hope for the best. I have huge metal stakes that were recently taken off the trees in the front yard. They were with those trees for 6 years since I moved into the house ;)

Ike has moved north, I do believe. It could still come back our way. Still a cat 2 which is good.

We have been under a mandatory evac for about 14 hours. Lots of panic, Lowes got a new shipment of generators and the price went from 649.00 to 799.00 in about 15 minutes.Hmmmm

Thanks for all the good words and tips.

I am very superstitious.

Houston is under the gun now. What a mess the last evacuation was.

We went down yesterday and boarded up everything. We moved everything from the yard into the store rooms, it took us 6 hours nonstop to anchor, and tie everything down. We brought back the boat, and all the fish and shrimp, from the freezers. We left at 5:30pm, when we got on IH-37, you would not belive all the vehicles pulling boats and 5th wheel trailers, going to San Antonio. We saw a line of navy seal boats, and Texas game wardens boats, going down IH-37, I wounder where they store them?. There was so many vehicles pulling, but everyone was doing 70mph, so there was no problem. We brought back fish and shrimp, from the freezers, so this morning we had to go buy another freezer to store everything in.. Now it looks like Ike will go North. I brought back about 6 brugmansia plants, with me, I wish I had not dug them up, but I did what I thought was best. I hope they make it. I will go plant them later today. I hope everyone in the Houston- Galveston area, are safe. Barbra,

After Rita I'm not budging from the house. That was a nightmare. Took like 10-15 hours to get to San Antonio and 2-3 of that was merging onto I-10. It was faster getting from San Antonio to Roswell (yes rooms were booked that far out). They are actually saying they don't wan us in my area to leave this time, just the people in the worse storm surger areas.

Ike just decided to move due west. If he continues it is on us again. They say there are 3 million people who are evacuating. Lions, tigers and bears, oh no!!!! Where are they going to put all of them ???

We stay until it is positive on my direction. I run about 16+ links from satellites to buoys and software interpreting all of them. There is a lag in public advisories they range from 1-3 hours. My decision is based in real time.

So what do I do while I wait. Why take the dogs to the water.

What cute doggies Jim! It sure looks nice down there. We were supposed to come down this weekend. Ike messed up my plans big time. I am serious about my offer if any of you need a place to go. Doggies included are welcome here. Only one of our sons are here. The cousins from Germany are at the ex wife's house and the other son can't leave because his job is still planning to work til 3pm tomorrow in Houston and he will stay at his Mom's too. This storm is so huge its nearly the size of Texas so even if it doesn't hit you directly you will surely have damage. They are talking about 20 foot surge! Please be safe. Guess what. One of the plants you sent me has broken the calyx on the bloom so I hope I get to see it open soon. I also found two buds hiding on Shredded white. Those things look like overlarge okra pods, lol.

Jim, I am so worried about you. Please let me know you are ok. They said if you stayed on the island it was a death sentence. I will pray you are ok. REALLY HARD! As soon as you are able please check in. Between worrying about you and our son in Houston and everything else I am getting an ulcer. I'm going to bed now with with my bottle of wine. Please be ok. I consider you a friend.

We just got lights back on about 30-45 minutes ago. I'm not sure when they went out but it was off at 1:30am. We didn't get the worst part here but we still found trees down, fences (someone on the corner lost most of their fence) and people missing parts of their roof when walking around. And a transformer on fire.

My newly planted trees survived (I tied them up real good) even the baby apple but one of the ones in front was leaning at about a 40 degree angle to the ground and broken limbs in the one next to the door. Thankfully no damage to the house. I'm in a single story home in the middle of two 2 story houses though.

BTW I had my hydroponics bubbler on 12v/inverter for about 15 hours and the power decided to come back on at the same time I was charging the battery back up with the car!

Glad you came out of it ok and have power. I wonder if the home owners insurance covers plants??? Lots of salt water will kill most of them on the island.

A lot of my family and friends in the Houston area are without power and the water pressure is dropping. They have been given no date to have utilities restored. Glad there is a cold front here. Houston without power and water is like a preview of what hell could be.

Jim, I'm so glad to hear you're ok. I had my homeowners policy out not long ago and remember reading something about it covering "landscaping". Do you have flood insurance? That may be a reason they'd not cover plants. If you need anything replaced that I have here just LMK.

Happy to see people checking in and okay. Hurricanes are so scary, especially with all of the flooding in your area. I was at a public golf course today, here in Louisville, to videotape a PGA golf clinic. Ike's winds came rushing through, and we stood there watching 100' trees falling over all around us. Needless to say, the clinic was canceled. Fortunately, everyone got out of there unscathed. I can only imagine what it was like in Houston.

After hurricanes Francis and Jeane, all of my landscaping was wiped out, along with my fence. The windstorm insurance did not cover any of it. They only covered the "footprint" of the house... Not even the exterior paint! A special rider was required to cover anything else. Hopefully, that will not be the case for the good people of Texas.

The most important thing, though, is personal safety. Gardens will recover... especially for people like us, who are sure to make it so!

Let us know what you need replaced. You know we will all chip in and contribute whatever we have that you may have lost. I have Jim's two brugs that I can send back when you are ready. They are very hardy ones. I'm so glad everyone is ok. The boys are here from Houston and trying to find out when they are going to need to go back to work. I told them to stay here until then. No sense going home to no power and water if they can't work.

Most of the time the cell phones are still down. I got a message that there is still no electricity at work and that we will be going to the owners house at 10am (has generator). I have a feeling we will shortly find ourselves at the colo as they have 2 weeks diesel generator and keep it cold as possible in there.

Glad you are ok too Eric. Our younger son called his apartment and got the answering machine so he knows power is back on. He just left but the older one decided to stay a few more days since his work hasn't reopened yet. I told him I bet he is waiting til Jason goes home first to clean out the fridge, lol. They forgot to do it when they left.

I am glad we can se the funny side of things again. I am so relieved that everybody is safe and got through it unharmed. I prayed a lot and somehow it was answered for me to the point that I did not even get a good soaking of the lawn lol.
Kristy is right about building things up is no problem. As long as no harm came you you all.
