Some random pics. I haven't figured out how to put names by them. Lets see. #1 epi this afternoon. #2 back garden looking better due to cooler weather. #3 more little buds on a different brug I found today. #4 sick Day Dreams (has buds too though #5 Snowbanks new sport coming up beside dying mother plant (help!) #6 Red wasp looking bug on variegated hibiscus bloom scared me away from taking pics in that part of the garden #7 whatever the thing was I found at the phillipino store what it grew into looks like taro #8 Epi at 9:30 begining to open #9 Waldo blowing up his throat under my tuberose plant (he can't hide from me!)and last #10 epi at 10pm. I just took another one and its open some more. I'll take a few more as long as I can stay awake since I haven't seen it bloom in two years and it took 3 to bloom to begin with, lol. I have had it for about 7 years. It smells sooo good!

The pink flower ferny one is achillea. I think that how its spelled. The butterflies love it. I don't know if there is a common name for the gaura. I only know it as pink gaura, lol. The planters do weigh a ton. It was an old cast iron kettle I drilled holes in. I like the fish with the black nose and tail too. I tried to pick some unusual ones. I have a white one too with just a little red on his head. I run out and take pics in the morning or when I get home in the evening and let them download while I cook supper. Thats why its always late when I post pics, lol. I wish I had more time to work on my flower beds and feel like doing it when I do have time. I have to wait a couple days and recover every time I do major stuff. I won't be able to do a lot tomorrow but hope to finish up the front bed and clean up the mess, lol. I won third place in the tournament and it was a professional circuit and people that guide and fish for a living won first and second so I was proud of that. Won some money to send my Mom some extra. After we did the fish fry an ambulance and life flight helicoptor landed in the next cove over from us and someone said an 18 year old boy drowned. It was very sad and we didn't know how it happened but I was just telling my neighbor about it and he said he saw on the news last night that a boy was missing since yesterday out there so I guess it was him that they found. I think some kids found him in the swim area. I feel so bad for them and the families. It put a bad ending to an otherwise good day. I will say a prayer for them all.

hey magic ... we ought to start a new.. searchable-titled post about edging ... there are a few tricks to do it... first is a straight shovel... see link ... then to hone it surgical sharp .. you would not believe how much easier sharpness makes the job.. go figure on that ... it took me something like 20 years in the garden.. to learn to sharpen my shovels.. what a nimrod.. lol ... i seem to recall .... that there is one major cut per year.. with some cleanup rarely .. the trick is that grass roots.. only go about 3 inches down.. so the cut edge is about 4 inches ... and that is what stops the grass from invading the bed ... if you dont go back each spring.. the grass will root deeper and come into the bed ... most push mowers ... the blade overhangs the wheels by 3 to 6 inches.. so.. its not all that hard to mow the edge.. presuming sobriety .. lol ... you do need 100% concentration, especially on curves and circles ... its been a decade... did i miss anything ...??? i saw some utubes on lawn edging.. but i wanted to show you the shovel pic ... regardless.. the bottom line.. when dealing with the most invasive weed on earth.. grass ... is that no matter what you use.. you will never be done.. trying to stop its advance ... ken ps: oh.. i HATE .. with a passion.. PLASTIC in the garden.. so that stuff is not an option to a true gardener IMHO... but i found.. even with that .... the grass grows under it.. and you find yourself having to edge it also ... brick or pavers is a nice option... if there is a budget ... same with grass eventually going under it though .. but in magics garden.. with the prairie surrounding .. the formality of the brick edge would not fit ... as compared to the formal beds like dave's .... to each his/her own ... but think about the totality of the 'look' .. before you go do it.. simply because someone else does it .. MG is 99% pure chemical salts. Thats why is granulated and once mixed with water it does dessolve into a chemical based fertilizer. I have used MG in my vegetable garden some years ago and found that it tends to give edible vegetables an odd taste, especailly tomatoes and peppers. I prefer to use an organic based fertilizer for most of my garden growing. For my flowering containers plants, I do use a fish emulsion as well as bone meal to increase the phosphorous which in turn helps roots and blossoming. This year, I will also be mixing in some of the polymer crystals as some of my containers dry out almost overnight due to their locale in direct sun every day and with very thirsty petunia plants. For the tomatoes, and other vegetables, I like using an organic fertilizer from Ohio Earth Foods, called Re-vita. Its slow to break down and will not give plants a strong 'rush' of a fertilizer, which I don't feel is very beneficial to their normal growing cycle. The plants I grow are all from seeds I start usually in March. My sister has very sensitive taste buds and can always tell if I have used a chemical fertilizer like MG on my tomatoes. A gave a friend a small bag of my organic fert for his tomato plants. While planting some plum tomato plants, he accidentially added too much of the fertilizer to one hole when he set the plant in. If it were MG, the tomato would have been burned by the chemicals in MG. I told him that my tomato fertilizer is so mild that you can actually grow the tomato plants in it directly without any ill effects. For peonies, if they are planted any deeper than 2 inches, they will have small stems and leaves and will never have flower buds. A peony plant needs at least 2-3 years in a settled in spot in order to get enough of a root system to grow a few decent sized flowers. At one time, I felt it necessary to cut off all the green growth after they flowered, but was told it should be left to grow on its own until fall, when you cut off all the dead growth. They also need some kind of 2-3 foot tall fence to help the flower stalks from snapping over due to he weight. Ants love the sweetness that oozes out of the flower buds too, and it doesn't seem to harm the flowers.

I am probably spelling this wrong but its epiphylum Queen of the Night from what I have been able to identify it by. Its a night blooming cactus type plant. Waldo had his little flower hat on and was smiling so I put him in too. One more then I gotta go to beds. I don't think I'll make it til it fully opens.

Is this like a night blooming cereus that I saw in the Logees catalog? It is very pretty. I also liked the orchid cactuses in there. Why are you trying to stay up, does the bloom only last one night? Is it fragrant?

My brug is a multi trunk and one of the trunks swiveled and started to dry-up at the top tip so I just cut it off yesterday. Looked like yours in pic #5 is doing the same thing. What causes that?

Your epi plant is very unusal looking. The early stages of the bloom looks like something from a sci-fi movie to me. ;) It's really cool that you are showing the bloom as it opens tonight. It looks like an amazing flower. Does it have a scent? Can't wait to see the last pics.

What's the name of the brug that has the serrated looking leaves? Love the statue in your garden.

Kristy that is so great. Those epi are picky bloomers. My cerus has only bloomed once. The rest havent had long enough and now am running out of room for them. Soooo will be trading them away this fall. Hope you get a pic of it all the way open. Judy

The epi is beautiful. I have several but they do take a long time to bloom. The plant itself is nothing special but the blooms make up for it. I just love your little camera hog toad. lol

they do take a while to bloom (from cuttings). they have to get quite large and pot-bound first.

Here is last one. I got up about 1am and took it. I am so tired, lol. I told hubby is was an aphrodisiac so he would quit bugging me to go to bed and he stayed up late with me sniffing it like crazy even though he can't smell a thing, lol. It smells like baby powder to me. Yes, it only lasts one night. Here is a pic of this morning as well as one of another pods so you can see how wierd this thing grows. It gets huge long stalk that stick out all over and it takes up my whole dining room window during the winter but I keep it because of the alien looking flowers and a friend that passed away in Louisiana had given me the original 3 cuttings that this grew from. Dave I love your epi. I just got a cutting a couple of weeks ago for my first daybloomer. Those grow much more mannerly than the night bloomers so I wouldn't mind more of them, lol. Can you root cut up pieces of the leaf like the night blooming one or do you root the whole leaf? I forgot to ask so I had the whole leaf I got rooting at the bottom. I would like to know what causes that shriveling up of the stems too on the brugs. I tell you variegated brugs hate me. This sport is so pale I hope it lives. I don't know if I should cut off the mother stalk or not? It is hollow to the dirt. I love my frog too. I go out and hunt for him every night, lol.

Deb, I'll have to look and see if John kept the tag. Thats one that he took away from me this winter, lol. I don't think the lotus is taller but the shredded white is behind the statue and and has huge velvety leaves. I had a pot of roses sitting in the bed so I could weed eat around it and thought it looked pretty so I took the pic. Does anyone know whats wrong with Daydreams? Does it look like broad mites or a virus? I have stripped that thing so many times its unreal and they keep growing back the same way. Sprayed it moved it. I don't know what else I can do for it.

I was so tired last night that I couldn't stay up to see your last pictures of your epi. As I was re-reading the posts so I could see the progression of the epi bloom, I came across mine and I have to clear things up...I do not have a swiveling brug. (Laughing at myself) That would be something to see. (LOL) I have a brug that is shriveling.
Funny how your mind works when you are tired.

Kristy, I'm so glad you stayed up to capture the bloom opening. I have never seen this bloom and it was so neat to see its progression. Thank you for staying up half the night to share your bloom with us.

I had to laugh when I read that last night and thought dang that looks like something I would write. I knew what you meant though, lol. I enjoyed sharing the pics. Its not often I get to see this one but now that I found a spot its happy in it will bloom more often again.

I got it Deb and replied. I just remembered to tell you the ones I had before that were shriveling from the top down that I caught in time I cut them off at the healthy part and dusted them with wettable sulfur and it stopped it. This one I thought had new leaves coming out from the bottom of the stem so I thought it was ok and didn't do that but realized yesterday that the main stem was hollow all the way to the dirt and it was a new stem coming up from the roots where the leaves are growing. The sulphur is the same kind you dust potatoes with and tubers when you cut them up to plant to prevent mold and rot. I'm not sure if I should use it on the variegated one or not though. They have been so hard for me to make live I am scared to touch it, lol. Somebody help me, lol. I think I will make a new post about it. It may be getting lost with all the other stuff with the epi.
