salvia guaranitica + others

I have several salvias that so far are not showing signs of life. I did my best to leave them alone, I mulched them moderately and I did not cut them back for fear of winter damage... (pardon the spelling)

guaraniticas...some are showing life and others aren't

Van Houteii ... some are showing some aren't

Elegans ... some are showing some aren't

Should I continue to be patient? I am dieing to have big beautiful guaraniticas like the ones at Holly Hill Daylily so I can pull a chair up and watch the Hummingbirds...

My black and blues are coming up, but some of yours just may be in "cold spots". They are NOT one of these marginally hardy salvias that you have to be real careful with. If you lost any it may be to voles rather than to winter -- they have large roots in which they store a lot of food, and voles love to chow down on those.

some of my guars are showing leaves, some aren't. give them some time. mine have always come back eventually. if you're coming to the raleigh swap, i could bring you some. i don't have one, but i'd always heard van houteii was tender. in your zone the elegans should be fine- but they emerge late. did you cut the stalks all the way to the ground? they aren't supposed to like that, because it allows the crown to rot. i've had a pineapple that's come back 10 yrs or so now, with no special care, and not in a protected spot and i'm 7/7b. so you should be fine. you could trycarefully probing around & see if you see signs of life just under the soil.

Great info terrene! Thanks so much! I've exceeded my photobucket bandwidth that's why my pictures aren't showing anymore. They said, I've reached my max 10 gigabyte worth of network traffic. LOL. I found another server. It's actually a server that my friend and I manages. :P Has anyone tried to bring them in during winter? Mimick zone 7 temp? I've got a big 1 inch thick rigid styrofoam. If I make a solid box and put it in the garage, what could be the inside temperature if my garage's temp is at 0F in winter? Here are the pictures again.

Penny: I actually am hoping to get something interesting. I have several B&Bs around the yard and they came back from the previous year. My largest one was shrub size. It was right next to my salvia elegans and also near the salvia coccinea Lady in Red, so I am hoping to get a "new" plant. I harvested quite a few seeds but who knows if they were ripe enough to germinate or if they are fertile. I plan to try with a new group of 20 soon. The ones that didn't germinate from the first group have moved outside with some of my other salvia "slowpokes." I will be surprised to see anything grow in that container, but if any of them need a cold cycle, they are getting it. Becky

Salvia guaranitica 'Argentine Skies'

I grew Argentine Skies in Louisiana, USA for a number of years. Baton Rouge, LA has hot, humid summers, and occasinal winter freezes with temperatures dropping several degrees below freezing on several occasions each winter (zone 8, with winter temp typically reaching about 25 farenheit, perhaps -4 C?). Like most salvias, Argentine Skies would usually freexe back to the ground each winter. It spread far more rapidly than most other guaraniticas, and was generally more winter hardy. It was always reliably hardy for me in Baton Rouge. However, it was a spring and fall bloomer rather than a summer-long bloomer like the "straight" species or Black and Blue, or a fall bloomer like some of the other cultivars. I too liked the flowers, but wished they were produced in more profusion. Now I am growing Argentine Skies in Pennsylvania, which has cold winters (zone 6, with freezing weather typically from December thru March and low temps near 0 F, -15 C?). With winter protection it has survived the past several winters. In its current location it is overrun by other plants in the summer, so bloom is sparse. I need to move it to a better spot before I can really evaluate how well it will bloom here.

I'm wondering too. Have got Argentinian Skies in two places. The one in fuller sun is ALIVE, the other remains dormant. Time will tell. Black and blue is up and running.

I saw a huge crop of blue salivia in full sun against the building at UNC Hospital this week. I guess location is everything at this time of year.

What is that coral one that is so amazing right now? Gotta get some.

Pup, there is a salvia like coral flower blooming at BB's right now. Its been blooming for about three weeks. It is actually Stachys coccinea 'Hot Spot Coral'. A customer inquired as to what it was that was blooming and of course I had to get myself one also. Adele

Adele, I saw that early bloomer in the front gardens. Amazingly vigorous! Gorgeous color. Wonder if that will keep going all summer like a salvia, or is it a early one-timer.

My shadier salvias are now showing signs of life..both A-Skies and the fall blooming purple (majesty?).

S. coccinea blooms all summer, or at least it did when I grew it in PA.
