OT/ looking for gardens to visit in s.c.

Hi all! Im a regular at the cottage garden forum. My husband and I are planning a vacation to Myrtle beach from April 4 th thru 9th. I'm looking for awesome gardens or nature places to visit. So far I've found brook green gardens and the myrtle beach state park. My dh will be golfing so I'll be on my own and will probably have to take a taxi if it's a little far. So any suggestions or must sees? I'm beyond excited. I love public gardens ,and can't wait to explore the area! Thank you so much in advance! And if there's anything else you recommend, I'd love to hear it...spas, vineyards...

brookgreen gardens near south myrtle beach is the only one i know about since i'm not very familiar with SC. It's a combo of gardens & sculptures- beautiful no matter the season.

If I remember correctly, Charleston is about a 90 to 120 minute drive from Myrtle Beach. Besides Brookgreen, it's worth heading down to see Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation.

Early April in the South Carolina low country is peak time for bearded irises, so you may be able to see a Iris Society show.

If you drive north to Wilmington (NC), you could see Airlie Gardens/New Hanover County Arboretum.

I'd like to thank Carole and jljp for there great nursery imfo!! We had the best time there, just loved Rockhill, very picturesque area, the homes, trees, flowers, weather, everything was great!! Oh Carole, went to Poe's the first day there,(found some great stuff too!!) it was really neet! And jljp, went to Wilsons with my sister on our last day and that place was FANTASTIC!!!! WOW, did we ever love that place, good thing there was still a little room in the moving van for plants...lol..full van after visit! Boy, all the great things I had to leave behind, choosing what to get and what to leave without was soooo so tough. But we love our treasures and all found great new homes in our garden. Hey, any of yall ever want to try anything Tropical or Exotic in exchange for plants from Wilsons just let us know(!!) we grow tons of rare and beautiful things...but you know, there's always room for one more, and if not then somethings gotta go!! The beaches south of Grays Harbor were packed with people this afternoon - clam digging opening. Hopefully the shops, restaurants, hotels were getting a boost from the crowd, but me? Didn't stay and spend any money, I got wet for the first time in many years (sneaker wave), filled my hip boots, and came home soggy and sandy. And hungry, I'd planned on Mexican dinner in Westport. Buyorsell, that was a good point though. DH often works two days, stays one night a week in Seaside and since December 3, many times he and our tech have had the only two rooms occupied at the hotel. I don't know how these people are making it.... Sinfonian, contractors are still working under a 'take a number, get into line' policy since the storm, with those who have more urgent needs being priority. I did get glass back into my porch this week, and the masonry company is telling me possibly as soon as next week to replace my now missing chimney. The roofer will follow him - but my house has been sound and secure where many others weren't so fortunate.

These are so spectacular. I love how different they are from one another. I'm lucky to have been able to visit the NY Public Library on numerous occasions, and the Library of Congress. The Morgan Library in NYC is also wonderful, but as a former private library and now museum, I guess it doesn't fit with the others listed.

OT - Garden spider came to visit

Heres a common spider in my garden. A female Golden Silk Spider. It is a type of Orbweaver. They get big as my hand and I read, can even catch hummingbirds. Although I havent seen them get any hummingbirds here, I have seen them catch large butterflies and moths. The males are really tiny and brown. I'm not sure what this one is but its kinda fuzzy. He's eating a dragonfly. Possibly a type of jumping spider. I think this one is called a Spinybacked Orbweaver. They are really small but colorful. People call them crab spiders but they aren't really. This is an egg sac from the large Golden Silk Spider. They like to leave them on my plant trellises.

Riverbank Zoo in Columbia, has a great garden & they will tell you the name of the plant so you can look them up if you like. Columbia may be out of your way.

I would agree with the others for sure, Brookgreen, Middleton and Magnolia plantations are a must see. Also, if you decide on a daytrip to Charleston, try to spend a little time in the historic district along the Battery. The gardens with many of the historic homes is well worth your time as well as the beautiful architecture and antiques. You can find good information on the ones that are open for visitors and other local attractions at the Charleston Visitors Center. Enjoy the vacation, it's a perfect time of year to hit the SC coast for some spring relaxation!!
