Denise, that is Jim Hannah's truly amazing Abromeitiella brevifolia. It is hard to understand just how flawless it is without seeing it in person!

Ambromeitiella is quite hardy and tough. It grows on boulders at the Ruth Bancroft garden in Walnut Creek-a sure thing to have several winter nights in the 20's each and every winter. Add near central valley heat in summer.

Wow, thanks for the closeup! I've never heard of Ambromeitiella - is it related to Haworthia? Do you have any idea about whether it's a pot under there or how he got it to grow completely covering what's under there??

When I got this plant several years ago (from "Cactus Cowboy" - is Dave still around??), it was literally a ball, about the size of a softball, and I couldn't even tell where the roots had been in a pot. It's lost a lot of it's variegation since I got it, but I still love the way it grows...

It isn't very closely related to Haworthia, and is actually related to the bromeliads. I've talked to him about that plant before as it really is an impressive specimen. As it turns out, the plant grows out of a 6" standard terra cotta pot. He keeps that in a pie tin full of water to keep the humidity up and provide constant water for the plant. It is grown under shade cloth, and he says he regularly rotates it to make sure it is getting even light and therefore even growth.

The plant naturally forms those big mounds, so it was a more a matter of time than anything else to accomplish the "floor to ceiling" effect. He said he has been growing this specimen for about 20 years!

In any event, that is a very nice mound of Haworthia you have Denise! I have a smaller, non-variegated version of my own. I too really like how they sort of spill over the edge of the pot.
