What is a poesy?

I thought it was a flower. In my dictionary it is listed as the art of being poetic. But didn't the Victorians make poesys? Excuse my bad spelling please. LindaNC

Ring around the rosies, pocket full of posies...you're right, of course it means flowers. Seems the two words are related, though. Here's what one online dictionary said:

Any lady over the age of 80 knows what a posey is, and is thrilled to receive one. Typically made up of a small bouquet of Violets and/or Pansies with just about anything else used as a filler, tie a ribbon around the stems and present it. You've just made your first Posey. They have the power to brighten anyone's day. You could even use Dandelions! Anything will do. Just keep it small. Use tiny jars, cream pitchers, bud vases, jelly glasses, liquor sample bottles, anything small to put them in. I keep them lined up on my kitchen windowsill all Spring and Summer and look fwd to making my first one of the year soon.

They like average moisture with good drainage, mine just had way too much with that drain keeping the soil too wet but I'd planted it there because it was a moist spot and I'd read they like that. They also do well in partial sun. I sowed mine --warm temps in cups with plastic bags on top to keep moist-- in winter in a sunny window but you can sow in spring, they come up in about 10 days or so. Now that you brought it up, I decided sow some more to plant in some spots that get sun for only a few hours and see how they do. mxk3, first year with no blooms is fairly typical for perennials. By the end of the first year you should have a nice sized plants with good root systems though. I imagine keeping them a bit on the dry side in winter further north would be good so make sure it has good drainage. We had thick ice one year and I lost one to rot on the north side of the house.

Cute poem - but I'll still cut one down in a heartbeat. Actually I pull out seedlings on a regular basis thanks to my neighbor's ONE tree!! Recently scouted out some property that is being turned into a sports complex for a local university. Kudzu in the front, then chinese privet, japanese honeysuckle, and further in - hundreds of ornamental pear seedlings! One of the few times that I can say "thank goodness that this will be bulldozed!". In the areas that were not overtaken by these invasives, we found crested yellow orchid (Platanthera cristata), trilliums, 3 kinds of dogwood, elderberry, buttonbush, and lots of wonderful natives. Luckily most of this is around a lake that will be saved. No way of knowing what wonderful natives were suppressed by the invasives over time.

Hi Kay! i like both of them but if anyone knew that one of them is better then the other it had been easier to decide =) have written to Cayeux now and asked about this irises and hope they answer. I must limit my wishlist now and it isnÂ´t the easyest thing to do =) I havenÂ´t seen any tall bearded in bloom so i hope to se any this year, they look stunning in pictures. /susanne /Susanne

Thank you Roberta and Quirk! For some reason these weren't sent to me thus the delay in thanking you. I knew it had something to do with violets! So pretty, I remember one when I was a child with a paper lace doilly around the bottem of it. LindaNC
