Succulent Wreath Project

I recently attended a meeting of a gardening club. The guest speaker, who works at Sherman Library & Gardens, demonstrated how to make a succulent wreath. I signed up to take her November succulent wreath making class but I got antsy and decided to try making one based upon what I saw her do. She said it takes about an hour to make the wreath but it took me two hours........ Even as a kid I was called a slowpoke...... In any event, here are the results. It came out better than I expected. I look forward to it filling out. The outside diameter is 19". Now I just need to remember to water it every week....

This is so lovely! Congratulations! You may be slow, but you're talented : )

Once the succulents get established, you will definitely need to trim back some of the fast growers. I hope you'll resubmit this photo in a few months.

Now THAT'S a wreath! Great job, Mikey! I'd love to try something like that, but my front door is in full shade. :D

Sphagnum Moss & Wreath Making

Sheet moss is definitely easier to use and that's what I use most of the time. If it says peat on the sphagnum moss bag then it's the wrong type and won't hold together. You need just sphagnum moss without the 'peat.' I've found using plastic grid fencing that comes in rolls helps hold sphagnum moss in hanging baskets. I also use landscape fabric to line baskets so the soil stays in better. It's more work to cut the holes, but your efforts will last a lot longer so it's worth it. They are beautiful but I always imagine the plants outgrowing the wreaths. Nothing's permanent though, huh? I have the same problem with mixed succulent pots sold at box stores. The plants never go together. I make mixed pots for my friends but I'm always careful to find plants with similar light and water requirements, not to mention a similar rate of growth, dormancy and root system. The last one I did was all Haworthias, Gasterias and a Gasteraloe.

That's so pretty! I've often seen them in stores/nurseries and I KNOW I could make one that beats their $70 asking price! But I haven't tried yet. Would you mind posting (or making a link to) the directions/plan you used? I'd love to try!

The link below gives directions on making a succulent wreath. The way it was demonstrated to me was slightly different than in the below link but it's pretty close.

I had a difficult time finding a store that carried the wire frame wreaths. Michaels didn't have them and I finally located them at JoAnns.
