It's raining!!!

Yaaaaaaaaaaay! We finally got some in the San Jose area.

The storm missed us on the way down. I thought it would miss us on the way back. We had dark clouds yesterday, but only a spit here and there.

Woke up at 4:30 this morning to the sound of raindrops on the skylight. I thought it was over when I got up around 8. Went outside to check things out. Sure enough the ground was wet. There was still a light drizzle, but no drops. Drops started about an hour ago and it's still coming. Not heavy, just a medium light rain, but things are getting a pretty good soaking. My plants are going to be very happy!

On the down side, I have lawn tickets to Greg Kihn's summer sendoff concert tonight. Even if it's not raining, it will be a muddy mess......bummer.

Yeah, it's not raining here, but my BF the biker dude, can't do his annual migration to Reno. Did you see on the news? Sub Saharan Africa is under water after 30 years of drought... times they are a'changing.

Rained real hard here in north OC for about 20 minutes and then quit. However, it started up again later and rained on & off through the night. The sound of rain is music to my ears. - Mike

Susan, Yes, I plant beets every year. I like them pickled with cinnamon, as small whole baby beets and later when they get bigger, I slice them and pickle them. Yum! Ten times better than the ones you get in jars at the store. Have a very earthy taste that gets processed out of the 'store boughten' ones. Just can't compare. They are easy to grow, too. I like to plant them in 3-4 ft. blocks, but sometimes I just plant them in rows next to the onions. Yes, I have a well. Even with the pump coming on every few seconds, the electric bill for my watering never is more than 5 or 6 bucks and I water plenty. (Sheeesh! Don't tell anyone! They might hike up my rates!) I have a white grape tomato that I bought from a co-vendor at the Stillwater Farmer's Market. It is called, Snow White and it tastes like a grape, I kid you not. They are kind of a creamy white color - just a touch of yellow to the white. really pretty in a bowl with the little red grape tomatoes. Delicious as antipasto and yummy just as a snack. Anyway, I saved some seeds and anxious to grow some this year. I grow several varieties of tomatoes, so I am sure to have gobs of extra tomato plants that I can can bring to Swap. I will have Sweet basil, Lemon Basil, Lime Basil, Spicy Globe, Thai & Cinnamon Basils, too. As long as it doesn't drop down into the 20s and last for days, you can cover your plants with sheets and weight them down with small rocks. You can cover them with lots of hay, too, and that works great. Hay is a great insulator. If you want to get really clever, here is one of my methods that works fantastically: Fill black plastic trash bags with leaves or hay. Damp is okay. Tie them shut. Lay these along both sides of your plants, down your rows. Secure them with sticks so they won't blow or roll away in the wind. The black plastic will really warm up the soil around the plants during the day and if it is supposed to get cold at night, you can just throw a sheet or lightweight blanket over the bags of leaves. The bags will keep the blanket off the plants and help hold in the heat. Makes sure that you cover them back up before it gets dark to conserve the heat in the hay or leaves. I have used this method to extend my growing season well into the colder months. I grew green beans all the way into December several normal wintery weather years. In fact, I harvested enough fresh, crisp green beans on Christmas morning one year to feed my entire family that came to dinner! Blah, blah, blah! Nuff said. ~SweetAnnie4u

I love the rain too. I love when it pours and it's windy. I don't mind days of it, but I do like to get a sunny day just as much. I love snow too. I think I love changing weather. I would find it hard to live in let's say Los Angeles and have the same weather for long stretches of time. Even nice weather. Funny you should mention it terrene, about gardeners being more attuned to weather/nature. I was just thinking about that last weekend. Sunday morning I was watching the news and the anchors were talking about how great it had been to 'finally' get outside when it was so nice on Saturday, the 19th of May and that one of them had seen their neighbors who they hadn't seen since before the winter. I was so surprised because I had been getting outside about 3x a day every day with few exceptions, since the middle of March! lol I have to think that gardeners spend much more time outdoors than many non gardeners.

Billi is it usually very dry where you are in Australia? I wonder how your daylilies do , as that is the reason I got into daylilies myself 10 years ago . Where I am located I watch the storms go north of us one day and then south of us the next it seems. I grow in very difficult heavy clay soils so after many years of trying to fight the status quo here I decided to try daylilies as my ditch lilies did marvelously well while hundreds of dollars of other plants did not . In late July and in August you can sometimes find cracks in the ground large enough to lose your foot in it is so dry here . I was delighted to discover that daylilies dont seem to mind drought nor do they mind the heavy clay soil . The only one who does mind is me ( makes for some very hard work to dig up a big clump!) So happy for the gardeners who are getting rain. I heard on the news the other day that we are not getting either El Nino or La Nina this year as previously thought. After checking the temperature in the Pacific Ocean, the weather forecasters (I want to call them the weathermongers, with some affection) have declared it will be La Nada, meaning nothing, no ocean effect. I am really not making this up.

I had just a half inch in gauge this morning then another quick downpour brought it up to about .68.
It looks like the center of the low has moved back north just off Point Conception area.

I'm so happy for you who have waited so long and are finally getting some rain! The sky has been threatening me all day, but so far, only sprinkles up here north of Sac. I'd love to see some more of what we had on Wednesday.

I've grown rather sceptical of weather forecasts, but Dallas Raines was right on this time! We had steady rain from about 6 o'clock last night with intermittent downpours and about an hour of incredible thunder and lighting. I love it! Everything was so clean and fresh this morning, and I swear my oak trees are smiling...

It's been overcast & gloomy all day, just started a gentle sprinkle about4 p.m. It's not much, but we'll take what we can get!

It started here at about 2:00PM and has been raining off and on ever since. I hope the weatherman is right about tomorrow being nice. Our church is having it's big end-of-summer picnic & BBQ right after services.

We reached dew point over night the last two nights, Thursday and Friday nights, but barely a sprinkle from the clouds that are starting to choke the skies over BKF.

This should cut the forest fire danger down a lot. Everything has been so dry. My plants are all doing the Happy Dance, their little branches are swinging back and forth and their flowers up catching the rain.

I watched the doppler radar with dismay as I saw it raining 60 miles to the east of me and 60 miles to the west out past Catalina island but nothing here in North Orange County. Then finally when I had given up hope it finally started raining at 11:35 Friday night for about half an hour. Then a final burst of rain for about 15 minutes at 06:30 Saturday morning and I was pleasently surprised to see we had gotten a total of 1.25 inches in my rain gauge here in North Orange County. This is about a third of the total we had gotten in the previous 16 months. And it came while the trees still had leaves on them and could use the moisture, instead of in January when they would be dormant. The weather report said a September rain like this happens about once every twenty years, and we definitely needed this coming off the worst drought year in California recorded history.

Amen to that. It was coming down in buckets this (Sat) morning here in Burbank. The dust is down, and I am a happy camper.

The NWS gave us a 70% chance yesterday. We received nada. I, too, was watching Doppler as the rain glided gracefully around us to the west and north. Same to you, Mama Nature! Hmph!

Isn't this heaven? I immediately lit a fire!! And danced around it naked....no not really but I was tempted.
I had just started decorating (inside) for Halloween.
It was dark and gloomy later in the afternoon....which I love.
What a great sound...a real downpour here in Hawthorne.

If we had downpours it must have been at night. My rain gauge is at 3/4 of an inch.... not too bad for here.

Shucks. All BKF has had is that for the last couple nights we have reached dew point and the roofs have had some dripping from the eaves. Plus it sprinkled a bit. I don't think we have had anything we could call rain yet.

But the wind blew down my shade cloths and I have reasoned that it has cooled off enough to leave it down. The Sun is riding much lower in the sky now and the blazing patio scenario that has cost me so many seeds in this, my first year of gardening, seems to be fluxing into a cooler place, so cool that I am wondering what I should take indoors. Nights are down to as low as 55F/12.5C.

It sure would be nice to get a good soaking here. But hopefully, it won't interfere with scheduled exterior paint work.

We were in the Lodi area yesterday and stopped by Jessie's Grove Vinyards. They were a little worried because the Zinfadel harvest is a few weeks away and the vines are loaded with clusters. They said that rain at this time could cause the grapes to mold.

It's raining!!!
