Butterfly Garden

So, had to go out for an oil change today...

and decided to swing by Lowe's since it was next door.

Started poking around in the citrus, looking for tangerine or something I don't already have, and found three GST eggs. Then two cats.

Now thinking, OK what am I gonna do with them all day during my errands? I go back to the car and get my bottle of water, finish the water and carefully put them in the bottle. I finish my shopping at Lowes and on to Home Depot, where I find a couple (three I think) more cats. And bought a tangelo tree.

The caterpillars traveled with me for the rest of the day, groceries and Target. I carried the water bottle the whole time keeping the lid off mostly for air flow, while watching for attempted escapees. One actually did crawl out onto my shopping list and I had to get him back in.

I remember a while back there was a post about the silliest/craziest things you have done for/with caterpillars, driving with them crawling on you, etc...

Couldn't find that post so starting a new one here.

BTW, the cats were on various citrus plants at lowes and HD, some are a few days old and quite healthy and vigorous looking, even after shopping all day. So I guess that means no pesticides, although I am still nervous about putting them on the tangelo I just bought. I also remember another post about feeding HD citrus just recently? Anyway I'll probably let a couple on it after showering it down good, as I am getting short on young leaves...

hi there - that is great, i would have done the same thing! i have been raising my gst's on three citrus trees from lowes, one we got two months ago, the other two are four years old - have had no problems, i assume the HD ones are treated the same way...

I've done that,man! lol! Well,not with GST cats,but with other kinds.Btw,it's ok to leave the lid on,as there is plenty of air for them inside the bottle.The only danger might be from baking in the hot sun.

Our temps were lower than predicted (grrr) and the covering I used wasn't enough for 27 degrees. I have two Husky Cherry Reds which were about 9" tall and have now lost their leaves. The lower stems are still green. I'll keep watering them and see what happens next. Lost most of the leaves on the figs (right next to the house), all the new growth on the spring-flowering camellia (right next to the house), all the new growth on the dwarf Burford hollies on the side away from the house, much of the new growth on the inkberries I planted last fall, and most of the (very new) leaves on the young walnut trees. Of course this is NOTHING compared to the infamous 2007 freeze. So far the apples and cherries (which had already flowered and set fruit) seem okay. The two podocarpus (which some people say shouldn't even be grown in anything colder than zone 8) are just fine -- even the new growth. Go figure.

I do think ORB will go out, because the market was TOO full of it. When I was looking for lighting, it was difficult to find anything else. Walking into store after store full of no other options made me want to find something different. The only ORB thing in our house is the front door knob/handle set. I noticed the other day that the top side of the knob (inside) is losing its dark finish...and not in a nice, soft, glowing way, but some of it looks like scratches, even though they're not scratches in the sense that they go into the metal so you can feel them. Like the rest of the door hardware in our house, it's an Emtek, which seem to be of good quality, so I wouldn't think that their finish is any worse than anyone else's. Of course, that might not happen on cabinet knobs since there is less surface area to wear.

Katiee511 we're suckers too, we have done the same thing, running around like chickens with our heads cut off to accommodate everyone who wants to be everywhere at once! As you can see from the picture we cleaned it out that evening so he could start in that room first thing this morning. Traci, you are so smart to move out, I'm betting the fumes from refinishing will be overwhelming for the first 24 to 48 hours at least! Our 8 year old border collie thinks she's 6 months old too, what kind of dog do you have? Between our two dogs, the house becomes a race track several times per day! It should be interesting to see how they slip and slid on the new wood everywhere, including the bedrooms! Our last house had much more storage space, this new one doesn't have an attic (they didn't use the right trusses) or a basement so we've jammed stuff in every nook and cranny! A friend of mine got one of those PODS during her remodel and we probably should have too...oh well too late now! Good luck with your remodel! As far as our "new friend" goes, he's not trying to sell us anything yet. Part 2 is posted, and I think it's possible he (or she) is just giving us the benefit of knowledge about what goes on in China and elsewhere. I have a friend who's paid quite a bit for these "original" copies, and I bet she doesn't know they're sort of a paint-by-numbers. She'd probably appreciate the posting above. I am known to be naive, so I acknowledge maybe there will be a part 3 where we're given a sales pitch, but so far I don't see what Zhenwei stands to gain personally by the postings. So up to this time, I thank the poster for the information.

Hahaha; this spring was my first kidnapping, BST's. I now keep a small container with the center of the lid cut off and covered with a piece of tulle covering it. Next year I'll have a tiny container in my purse, lol...
