Zonal geraniums (Pelargonium hortorum) in containers

I enjoy keeping these geraniums from year to year. I have found that after two or three years the base of the plants becomes silver and woody. Before this occurs, I take cuttings and start new plants in the belief that the new plants will have more vigor. Have you found this to be the case?
