Your onion sets are producing 3-6 different stalks? If they were separate stalks or shoots that would be a bad sign as they end up splitting into many small bulbs. I don't think I've ever seen an onion split into more than 2 shoots/bulbs though. Maybe this is just 3-6 leaves all coming from one spot at the base of the onion plant. That would be normal and good. Fertilize and water thoroughly now, while the plants are small. Feeding them later when you can see that the forming bulbs are going to be smaller than you hoped is too late. The amount of growth that happens while they are young will determine the bulb size later. The bulbs do form near/on the surface. I'm not sure about your climate but I'll go on a limb and guess you will notice a big increase in size around mid-summer. after the bulbs stop swelling a lot cut slowly back on water and let the bulb tops begin to dry out. Eventually the tops will die and the bulbs will "cure" and be ready for eating/storage. We grow Walla Walla sweets here in the Pacific NW. If Texas Sweet is similar (although it *obviously* can't be as good) it may not be a storage onion. In that case eat em up within two months or so. Send me some if you need help in that ;-)

I cut all my plant back in the fall, so the dead plant stuff does not end up in the water over winter. This help keep the gases under the ice down and makes spring cleaning much easier. Cut them short so new growth has lots of room to grow.

are these over wintered dead pods ... which are probably open and empty ... or are you in so warm a zone.. that they are just done blooming ... if so.. just snip them off.. whats to lose ... they will either rebloom or they wont ... just the flower.. not the whole stem ... you should already see new immature buds ... a picture would be worth a million more words .... its really helpful if you provide a full set of facts ... ken
