My first bloom from a seed, pod fell off !!

My first seedling was about to bloom and I could NOT stop touching it, so today it fell off in my hands. I wanted to smack myself .. LOL I took it and cut it open and saw what looks to be 3 skirts, I could be wrong. The cross is Apricot Moonflower X Creamsickle ( Hb: Dawna Bernier ). Take a look and see what you see. ~Edna~

That sux,big time,Edna! I would smack myself too!LOL Did you try to look up the skirts into the center? Miht be too small too tell! Let the experts decide.

Theresa, The picture I posted is the Pod torn apart. 1st one is the caylx, then the other 3 look like 3 skirts, they were inside each other. I can see little tendrils on them...

I'm not familiar with their germination rate. I grew some about 15 years ago when I worked at a nursery in Vero Beach. They certainly were the coolest looking seedlings and plants I have ever seen. I had the joy of going to a nursery years ago in Punta Gorda that only sold Desert Roses and plants in the Adenium family. It was so much fun to see the different shapes and colors.

I posted somewhere else that I sowed 10 of the weakest seeds. I either grew minis, or extremely weak plants. (Surely the latter?) Both of these are 2-3 weeks, and tiny. I still have four pods on my oldest pink, and two very large ones on my double pink. Double pink will complete soon, and those who reserved seeds will be shipped. I believe I will have many seeds remaining as even the pods that opened early had ~20 in each pod. If size of pod is any indication, and it should be, the double pink will have 60 per pod. So if you want seeds, please let me know.

It is a hardy plant in my area and is completely animal resistant, and I don't do anything special either for new plantings or old ones. If you've had difficulty overwintering them, I'd be more likely to consider growing conditions such as poor drainage or overly dry settings. How is the current planting situation similar to or different from previous attempts? I grow mine in a good amount of sun in moist but well-drained soil with a good layer of mulch.

I LOVE Geraldine. She is a real stunner.. Great growing.. How old is she? Within the last couple of,months, I have begun the seedling journey when one of my big girls rewardeded me with a seed pod - just wondering how long it has taken for Geraldine to reach this stage of maturity.

STOP TOUCHING THE DAMN BUDS!!!!!! It does look like at least a double. Sorry that it dropped. Does it have any more buds? I'd keep that one in the GH just to see what the blooms look like if it doesn't flower before the first frost.

Sorry about you bloom but that was so funny about the skirts. I see a disected bud, lol. I have no idea. I hope she gets some more.

Girl I am sooooo sorry.. How exciting to have a bud on a seedling.. Does look like a Dbl for sure and maybe a Trip... You know themps are gonna drop and this one will produce more. "Step Away"..LOL I cn't wait to see what she throws....

Edna: send me your address. I'm sending you some mittens! Actually im in danger of doing the same thing myself. SuperNova has one HUGE, and I mean HUGE bud. I've never seen anything like this. I keep squeezing it to see how far the bloom inside has dropped. LOL. Maybe we need a straightjacket instead of mittens. Congratulations on what sounds like is gonna be a great cross. I cant wait to see one open (HINT, HINT! Keep your hands in your pockets LOL)

OMG Suzie, lol..learn from Edna's mistake..dont touch it!
Use a flashlight for cryin out loud. Put it on one side, shine it through to the side your on, and you'll see where it is.

I cant wait to see both of yours open! pix pix pix..dont forget about us, lol.

I am guilty of kind of squeezing the pod. I wanted to see how it felt, and if there was a possibility of it being a double. I reach down to do my daily squeeze, and I guess I sort of pulled up on it, and "SNAP", there she was in my hand. I can't tell you what I said... it wasn't pretty !! I have learned my lesson. It has other pods, but that was the largest one. Might be a week or so, maybe even longer. How cool would it be for your first seedling to be a double or triple ??? I counted 3 skirts, so I am excited.

Roflamo, ok I admit it. I squeezed Naughty Nick the other day too, lol. I try to limit myself to watching the buds through the window. I have only had a single bloom before and I was curious how the bud might feel different on a double or triple, lol.

Heck--I don't touch and I don't squeeze!! All I have to do is LOOK at them and the buds fall off. Tootsie has not been able to hold a bud yet. Naughty Nick still has no buds. For that matter most of my brugs have no buds and have not bloomed. It's been a bad brug year for me.
All I want is some skirts to look up under! LOL

I remember Mr Whipple and I'm not that old! lol I think the actor that played him recently died. Linda all my Tootsie buds dropped but it was infested with Broad Mites. I treated it with Forbid and the mites are gone and I have new buds. We'll see if these hold. If you want to look up their skirts just give them little patent leather shoes ; )

I got the Forbid but have not sprayed since we are getting rain still. I have to treat many of my brugs since I have quite an infestation of Broadmites. Maybe it will kill some of the Crzy ants too!

LOL! I am sorry you lost the bud Edna. I am also a bud squeezer, I have to feel and see if it is getting close enough to the end that it will start coming out of the calyx. One time I even tore open the calyx when it was close to the end because I thought it would come out faster, lol. So far I haven't snapped one off though.
