Crickets

My DD has a "chorus" of crickets serenading them every night outside the bedroom windows. Because of her two young boys she doesn't like to use any poisons. Does anyone know of a safe way to kill or capture them that is effective and doesn't use poisons?

I keep crickets to feed a pet lizard. I put an upside down egg carton (the cardboardish kind) in their cage and they crawl inside. You might try putting one in the cricket area to see if they go in and can be shaken out the next morning. Just a thought...

Having said that, aren't summer crickets a nice noise? Or is it just too loud and bothers them when trying to sleep? Soon it will be cooling, and at least in my area, the crickets are not so prevalent.

You know that is something I haven't heard at all this year.....I actually love the sound of crickets. I guess maybe they all died when I treated for all of the other hosts of pests that have been invading my garden. Wish the stuff worked as well on those ones because they just don't seem to want to go away!

Well, her description immediately brought the name of the insect to my mind, but I rejected it at first because I wasn't aware that MOLE CRICKETS were found in the northeast. As I told Dee, when she sent me her images, these little guys are the bane of Southern golf courses and lawns. There are several species of mole crickets; what Dee has found is probably the Northern Mole Cricket. Would you look at those incredible digging utensils they have?? Aren't crickets kept as pets in Japan and considered to be good luck? Please don't kill the crickets! Unless, of course, they're jumping into your dog's water dish!

We enjoy the chorus of crickets putting us to sleep every night. It is a reminder of the summer season. Crickets are a part of the soil food web and I try not to impact any part of it. Al

Hmmm ... must be cricket season. I have scads of them, and I love 'em. Yes, the Japanese (and Chinese I believe) consider them good luck. It is said that if crickets favor your yard, you're doing something right and should have good luck. I love the sounds they make and they don't scare me when they crawl over my feet in the entryway. That is, unless they are in my light fixtures inside the house, then they make too much noise. And jumping onto my face when I'm asleep is really too much.

Now, whoever it was who sent the lizards ... thanks! I love having animals in my yard (really), and lizards don't bother me at all (they come for the crickets). Does anyone know how to discourage them from crawling in my lap when I'm working in the yard? It's quite startling.

And about those oppossums. They're supposed to be good luck, and I think they're cute. And they come for the crickets and other bugs. Do they also like lizards?

My house is becoming a regular wildlife sanctuary.
