Linda, there is a group that is working on a public garden over behind the Agriculture Office. You will have to check inside for a contact person. Also, Eastern NC Rose Club, contact person is in Winterville. I can find it if you would want that info.

I've never heard of a "spring overseed." Maybe that's because I turn off the volume when I see springtime Scott's commercials. I've heard of fall overseed, but spring is the wrong time of year to seed fescue. Why? Because spring is right before summer and the new seedlings will have no chance of making it. Late August is a much better time to do the job. Can you nurse it along until then or is it too thin now? If you have to do it now, then you have to, but you already know the possible (likely?) consequences.

I hope we'll get to see you model your outfit, Patricia. Buford, Asheville is about 1 1/2 hrs west from us on I-40. I think there are a couple of GW rose people in Asheville, Michael in the mtns for one. Catsrose, I guess we should pick a definite date for our get together so you all can plan better. I'll try to hurry up and decide, but I think the third Sat. in May. I know I won't be able to make it to a number of garden tours but might be able to come to one. Would love to see all your gardens. Roanoke is not that far. Carla tells me Frogview would like to have a plant swap. I think that could be great also. Doesn't have to be roses of course. So if you want to trade, just bring along some plants. I hope we can get a headcount of who's coming in early May so Dickie knows how to plan on the food. If anyone wants to bring their guitar , ukelele, etc and sing that'll be great too. Linda

Melinda, I think the Mexican Fans are worth taking a chance on. I'm in the same zone as you, and have been growing 2 MF palms for the last 3 years, and they've made it fine so far. Washingtonia filifera and Windmill palms would be 2 other good ones to try. Any particular reason why you're avoiding on-line and mail order? You may have your work cut out for you, depending on what you want. Start with your Yellow Pages under Nurseries....call around and see what they have or what they can get.

Yes, there are several garden clubs, I believe. Call the Extension Office at 902-1709 and you should be able to get some information.

The group that works on the Ag Center gardens is the Pitt Co Master Gardener Volunteers. The Ag office is the Cooperative Extension Office on Government Circle off Old Creek Road. If I might shamelessly plug the Pitt Country Arboretum :).....there are guided walking tours on the first Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. (except June to Aug at 9:00 a.m. when it's cooler). There will be an Open House on Sunday, May 17 from 2:00 - 5:00.

thanks for the reply--I will be out of town for that open house weekend but I will be sure to visit the arboretum. i have moved from western New York area and am learning a whole new way of gardening here. The soil here is very different. I lived the same place for 40 years and the soil was perfect from years of composting. Now I am learning new plants and hoping my old favorite transplanted "bring alongs" will make the transition,.
