First of all, don't plant the little guy in regular dirt!!!

I can't remember the exact mix, but Venus Flytraps should be potted in peat and perlite, and perhaps some sphagnum (sp?) moss as top dressing. A terrarium really isn't neccessary for Venus Flytraps, despite popular belief. You can either grow your little guy on a VERY BRIGHT windowsill or outside. These plants need as much light as possible! Only water it with distilled or rain water. You can water it from the top or you can keep the pot standing in a saucer of water, as long as there's drainage holes in the bottom. Misting isn't really needed, and I'm not too sure about your dormancy question. Someone else around here should be able to answer that though. Hope all this helps! Good luck and happy growing!

50/50 Sphagnum Peat Moss/Perlite mix.
Water wise you must use pure water, options are: Rain water, Distilled water or Reverse Osmosis water.
If it came from walmart with a dome over it, lift the dome up no one side for about 3-4 days, then do the next corner, then all 4 corners, then remove the dome (this will adjust it to your humidity)
Only feed it insects, no meat or other crazy ideas.

Other than that, in winter these plants go into hibernation in the wild, this rest period allows the plant to grow well in the next season.
Dormency temp is between 40-50 F.
At this time you dont want to water your plant as much and dont feed it at all.
For normal growig stand the plant on a water saucer that is kept filled with good water.

###Remove your venus' flytrap out of that black dirt as soon as possible. Regular dirt contains too much salts and crap you do not want to know about. A terrarium is not needed to grow these plants. Venus' flytraps grow better in windowsills or outside in a sunny location.

1)Firstly, Venus' flytraps live in Sandy/Peaty poor nutrient free soils in the wild in the Carolinas. They prefer and thrive well in soils like Sphagnum Moss, Peatmoss +Perlite, or just peat moss itself(not regular potting soil) So go back to Walmart and buy a Bag of "Sphagnum peat moss" and a bag of "perlite." After you do, mix 50% peat moss, and 50% perlite. Wet the Media, and make sure that is completely moist first.. then you can repot your new plant back to its new sanitary home.

2)Watering, Watering can be simply done by using a tray method. if you have some type of small saucer, you can use that. fill in your saucer with clean water(reverse osmosis, or clean rain water, or bottled sodium free water)After you filled in your Water tray(or Saucer) you can summerge your potted plant. That way, the new moist soil will help your plant's new roots to grow. it will take about a week or two to see your plant improving. never allow the compoist to dry out. Water your plant using the tray method daily..

3)Sunlight, Venus flytraps grow in full sunlight in the wild. They love growing outdoors in the sun. you can give your new plant atleast 4-6 hours of full sunlight for vigorous growth. when you grow it outdoors. it will feed it self. During the summer months, venus' flytraps need atleast 4-6 hours of direct sunlight in order for vigorous growth. If you grow your plant in a shade spot, it will look distorted , pale and sickly.. so i recommend you to grow it outdoors or in a sunny windowsill..

4)Dormancy, Venus' flytraps indeed need their dormancy period. they enjoy chilly winters 40 degrees and under. They experience their dormancy period From Late October to early March. If you still have your plant, what you can do this winter is simply; put your potted plant inside a ziplock bag, and place your plant(inside the ziplock bag) inside the fridge atleast for 3-4 months(Later October through early february) that's the only trick you can do for them in order for them to face dormancy(unless you live somewhere where it's really cold in the winters,other wise, you can leave your plant outside all year round. but when the plant experiences dormancy, don't water it as much, leave the plant's soil bearly moist.

*i hope this helps, So.. firstly, go back to walmart, buy new Sphagnum Peat moss(Shultz or Lambert) and some perlite. Mix and wet the media, then repot your innocent venus' flytrap into its new home.
*After you repot it, it is best to acclimate it under lights or in a bright indirect location for atleast 1-2 weeks, after acclimating it to your surroundings, you can start growing it outside, or in a windowsill.. Make sure you buy the schultz peat moss, not the Scotts peat moss. The Scotts peatmoss is nitrogen rich, and that is bad.

You can get the Schultz peat moss at Walmart.

If you would paste a pic of your plant that will give a better idea of how to better adapt it to the environment.

I bought a few VFTs at Walmart a few weeks ago, and I did not have to adjust them. I took them out of the cover and the soil, I repoted them outside where they took four hours of morning sun and one or two hours during the evening (no direct sun) and they were doing great! I placed them last night in full sun to see how they do.

Some of these plants are already adapted to full sun, for the nursery grows them in full sun. But then they place a dome on top, and sell them like that so that they will not get to dry out during the time they are at the store.

So if you took the plant as soon as it came in the store, it will not need adjustment. So you can replant them in a larger pot with new soil and place them outside. Make sure after planting that you mist the plant well and make sure that the soil is moist all over.

Sometimes you have to prime the soil in order to get it moist before you plant the plant in it. You do this by mixing it with water really well untill you do not see the soil create dust when you mix it. If you leave dry pockets they will stay that way for a long time so make sure you prime the soil, if it is dry.

If you take the dome off and the plant becomes kind of droopy in a few minutes, that is a sign that the plant needs more moisture. In that case you have to slowly adapt it to live without the cover before you do anything else.
