Rat droppings and vegetable gardens

My husband and I took down an old, rusty 8 x 10 storage shed next to our garage to make more room for our vegetable garden. To our dismay, we found a LOT of rat poop between the garage wall and where the shed used to be. I'm just airing out the area now, but I plan to don a mask and shovel the stuff up into plastic bags and dump it. We both have second thoughts about putting a vegetable bed back there now, and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this sort of thing:

Is there any spray or chemical I can use to decontaminate the area?

Is there any risk of contracting disease from vegetables planted nearby, say three or four feet away?
