Yes, they will bloom. The only ones I have in bloom so far are planted in a bird bath. The blooms are pink. They are planted in full sun.

I have a hens and chicks that is in partial sun ... its has yellow blooms and has been in bloom for a few months!

Yes, assuming you're talking about Sempervivums they do and they will - the flowering head then dies (but, like Aeoniums, not the plant).

Are yellow blooms on a sempervivum unusual, cactusmcharris? My son brought me one home from the country market a month ago and it has been blooming yellow heads non-stop since.

I have a couple of hens and chicks that never bloom too. They simply don't thrive. Maybe I'll let my pembrokes pee on them and put them out of there misery, or maybe the extra nitro will energize them.

I'm still a babe in the woods when it comes to C/H succulents, but I've not seen a yellow-flowered Semp before, and with the incredibly-useless 'Hens and Chicks' name being used so widely and almost always causing a traffic jam (in terms of what one really has with that 'name' attached to it) I wonder if Zech's plant isn't an Echeveria.

Do all echeveria have the same shapped flower? If so this isnt an echeveria ... it has flowers the same shape as the one in the picture but yellow

Micro, does it have a long thin stalk, or a thick bundle like Jeff's bloom? Echeveria and Sempervivum are both sometime called 'hen and chicks', but have very different inflorescences. Echeveria can make multiple inflorescences on each rosette, and will live after blooming. Sempervivum make only one inflorescence per rosette, and die after the bloom is done. The flowers look somewhat similar, but the structure of the inflorescences is very different (so is the flower if you look closely). Sempervivum flowers are generally red, pink, or white. Yellow would be very unusual.

Yellow is a common Echeveria flower color. Google sempervivum flower images. You will not find yellow examples except for a few misidentified Echeveria blossoms. Again, the structure of the inflorescence stalks are distinctive.

Hmm, I must be misremembering the color of some semps--the ones I adopted from wild ones growing in an untended corner of a university garden haven't bloomed, but I could have sworn their forebears had yellow flowers.

Pretty sure they're semps too. Guess I'll have to go back and see sometime if they're flowering to check (if we get a summer in Seattle, this year).

paracelsus's flowers do look like mine. I'm amazed if it's an aeonium because the seller had it growing outside, I think it would be tender, wouldn't it? I'll post a pic later.

teengardener, I don't think it matters to the plants how old we are, at least, I hope not, anyway! But how long does yours bloom? Mine seems to be going on and on and is producing new buds all the time.

Micro, your Aeonium is A. simsii, a miniature form, and one the few that is not monocarpic (flowering only once, then dying). It is also notable for its brown longitudinal stripes or spots on the leaves.

My Aeoniums live outside year-round, and routinely experience temps in the high 20's F without problems. I had one large green Aeonium that did not survive five nights with lows down to 25F with up to twelve hours below freezing. The others in the ground did fine. Those in pots came inside during the Great Freeze of January 2007.

Aeoniums take three to four months to form an inflorescence. There are many flowers buds on these foot long structures, and they open sequentially on each little side branch, so the bloom keeps flowers available for pollination for several weeks.

Just to add to the discussion about yellow-blooming Sempervivums. Harry posted one last year on the other forum, having it tagged as Sempervivum montanum. I believe it may have been S. wulfenii, though (a yellow-flowering species).
