new mini bog from lowes

If you are looking for a nice container for a mini bog. I use the large tub that Lowe's sell for mixing cement. You find them in the building supplies dept. They are about 2 ft X 3 ft and about 9-10 inches deep. They cost about ten dollars each. What I do is go to Walmart and buy Schultz canadian peat it comes in bags about 8 qt dry measure. I use about 5 or 6 bags per tub and top this off withabout 2' of sphagnum. You can usually find this in the orchid section of either store. After mixing the peat with distilled or rain water you put two 1/4' drill holes about 1' below the top of the spagnum. This works very well for me even with the heavy rains we have here in central Florida. CPs are Carnivorous Plants. If you use the richness of the horse manure you're not likely to be able grow these as they like nutrient poor not nutrient rich soils. This richness could also cause an odor problem if it stays wet. I'm not suggesting that you use something else just be wary of the proportions. As for the satelite dish. there was some discussion about using one of these some time ago and it may have fallen off gardenweb by now (do a gardenweb search to see if that link is still around). It think it was decided that the dish would not be much use. If you have very heavy clay soil and a low area you could just dig a hole mix some of the original soil that you dug with some of the manure/soil and some sand. this would give you a pretty good place to grow things like cardinal flower lobelia, swamp milkweed, and probably a host of native moisture loving plants. The peatmoss is not for fertilization or aeration. It is basically just a growing medium that is very low in nutrients, acidic, and holds water very well. For those of us who who have bog gardens fashioned after true bogs peat moss is essential, as peat is formed IN bogs.

Well since no one has jumped in here.. i will add my 2 cents. I have 2 16in wide by 7in high clay pots that sit in 2-3in of water (trays). The spag/peat always stays damp but I have never had any problems with fungus/mold/rot. I would think that as long as you are set up in a good amount of light and air movement... you wouldn't get rot problems either. As far as the drain holes. You might have to add a ring of gravel around your bog on the layer where your drain holes are so that the dirt won't clog the holes and enter the bog. I too have clay soil so when I eventually do a bog I will have to add a drain line at the low point which carries the water away. You wouldn't want to sit the bog in a larger hole with gravel to make a drain basin since this would delete the insulation factor when it gets cold. You would need the dirt to bog contact I would think. Overwintering. I think they say to add mulch insulation over the top to keep it warmer. Mosquitos. I wouldn't think it would be a problem unless your drain holes aren't working. Small plastic containers. As long as you are sitting them in a deep plastic tray of water, overheating shouldn't be a problem.

Sheldon My bog has been in since 1998. It is doing exceedingly well and as long as one is careful to not let nutrients into the bog there shouldn't be a problem, and no reason to replace the "soil". I used a combination of peat, sand, pine needles and perlite (a mistake). Yes I do also add Pine needles from time to time to keep the ph low as well. This spring I had over 60 flowers on my pitcher plants. A number of my bog orchids and 3 species of sundew are now blooming. My only problem is, as much as I love cranberries in the garden they have taken over and some of the smaller plants have suffered from the crowding.

You can look at mini gardens in two ways: First, what I feel is a miniature of a LARGE garden, like the bonsai, make a small garden structure, get a small tree=like shrub, and have the hosta stand in for the bigger plantings if it was normal size. Like get a bird house shaped like a real house for the garden structure. Make a tiny hammock, hang it from appropriately sized arbor for viewing only. Even looking at my real hammock gives me a peaceful feeling--highly recommend looking at a hammock to relax. :) The other approach is to simply feature them as a collection of small plants, exquisitely displayed, have a nice Zen style background. I'm thinking miniaturize Babkas Barcalounger arrangement. I fyou have a child with an angel garden, this could also be a fantasy place, a secret garden, like that of The Happy Hunter I so thoroughly put foot in mouth mentioning.

Im actually new at this.
Years ago my brother found a VFT back home in South Africa.
Nothing was known about these amazing plants and so the abuse began.
The plant was fed constantly, it was repotted in normal soil and was given tap water.

Everyone wondered why it died.
Anyhow when I got to the US, I remebered that plant as well as the D. Capensis my friend had, I started reserarching online, I purchased "The Savage Garden" and started emailing people like Peter D'Amato.
My wife ordered me a fishbowl terrarium from Meanplants.com which had 1 typical VFT, 1 Dente VFT, 1 D. Aliciae, 1 D. Adelae and 3 butterworts.

I grew them quite well giving them lots of light from bulbs I had purchased, only problem was my tank got overgrown.
So I got another tank, and then another.
1 D. Adelae became 3, 1 D. Aliciae became 2 and so on.
Eventually I hated the terrarium setup, so I went to look if these plants could grow in lower humidity.
Thats when I found info from cobraplant.com which went against the norm of most sites and books.
I thought Im going to give it a try.
So I repotted my plants in 6" pots with a humidity dome I made from various plastic containers.
I slowly lifted each side over the weeks, a month later my plants where still looking perfect.
I then saw "foliar feeding" online, I researched this as well, then came rooting hormones and SuperThrive.
Each plant I got I attempted to harden off with great success.
My Primuliflora butterworts are beutiful under 40% humidity, so is all my other plants.
My only loss in the war was my prized D. Aliciae which I loved so dearly.

At present I have the follwong plants outdoors:
N. Ventricosa
D. Capensis Broad Leaf
D. Northern Dew Thread
2 S. Flava
S. Cobra Hood
S. Rubra
S. Judith Hindle

Indoors:
Typical VFT
Dente VFT
Red Dragon VFT
Big Mouth VFT
3 Drosera Adelae
1 Drosera Capensis Typical
1 Drosera Capensis Broad Leaf
1 Drosera Capensis Alba
4 Pinguicula Primuliflora

The Pinguicula primuliflora's where meant to be only 1, Meanplants had a delayed order of over a month with me so they gave 2 extra, then on another delayed order (mixup) they gave me a HUGE full sized one with flower, this one is truely a sight to behold, its constantly shooting up flowerstalks and has 2 baby plantlets at the moment.

I'm still learning alot, but generally dont give "advise" but my experience that Ive had growing these beutiful plants.
Ive made many of the beginners mistakes, such as overfeeding the VFT, or letting a young flytrap flower.

SO I guess Im a "expert in training"
I do learn alot from many people here though, for example if it was not for Elgecko I would not have attempted to harden off my Drosera Adelae which is growing perfectly with LOTS of dew in the 40% humidity indoors.

ive actually met the author of the savage garden (peter d.) hes up at california carnivores (now this is not a business thing, simply a reference to a place that ive been to)....

nice guy acutally. havent bought the book yet but next time im up at his place, i'll have him autograph it!

Its a neat book, Im quite fond of it actually.
Would love to visit his nursey oneday.
Here in Utah there is no CP's really for purchase.
Our Home Depot and Lowes dont carry such things either.

But old cobraplant is my source.

perhaps then there is a market for a cp nuresery in utah? if there is a demand for it there, why not fill it? you may be just that person to start it off in your area... "salt lake carnivores" or something. heh.

by the way, what kind of IT company do you run? i am an ex dot-commer myself, programming background. *ewww programmers...*

i kind of figured you were the sheldon B from the site, how many sheldons in utah are there that like carnivorous plants? :-)

Well I come from an Administration background (was a LAN ADMIN for a large bank and a NETWORK ENGINEER for a large casino back home)
Pretty much am doing consulting, anything thats broken I try to fix, I also have customers who want their systems to do certain tings but are not sure if its possible, I try and make it work.
I like dealing with as much good freeware alturnatives as I can,Im not one to push for a commercial product when there is something that is GPL and does the job even better.
