Mission Fig tree stopped growing ?

I planted a bare-root Mission Fig tree in February this year.. I transplanted it in April because I realized that it was not receiving enough sunlight.

The tree has produced non-sucker growth of about 2 feet but has not grown for the last couple of months. The leafs are still on and green but there are no new leaves being added on. I have a drip watering it on a daily basis (away from the trunk).

Is this growth rate normal ? If not, any suggestions on what I could do to spur the growth ?

I could have "funny" figs too, but my figs put on growth spring/early summer and that's it until next spring.

Your fig is probably getting ready for winter, but you could also ask your question here on the fig forum:

I've uprooted the main tree and separated it in 4 rooted sections, the largest of which is now in a 25 gallon pot. It's kind of confusing how figs work. Here's a link to Ray Givan's website that explains it some more: http://www.raysfiginfo.com/figsex.html But yeah, persistent figs like Mission and most of the varieties that we grow will be able to set and ripen fruit even if the fruit has not been pollinated. That fruit even has seeds in it, but there are no fertilized embryos living in the seeds. They will never sprout and grow. Wikipedia states this about the term Parthenocarpy: "In botany and horticulture, parthenocarpy (literally meaning virgin fruit) is the natural or artificially induced production of fruit without fertilization of ovules." Some of the earliest varieties are: Florea, RdB, Malta Black, Improved Celeste, and Marseilles VS Black. All are considered hardy to zone 6. In zone 5 you'll have to some work winterizing and choose carefully if you want to plant in ground (try Florea and Marseilles VS Black) or grow in containers.

Mission leaves (Francisciana) characteristically exhibit signs of FMV. However, FMV does not seem to stunt the growth of Mission as much as in some varieties. Mission trees can grow to be among the largest of fig trees if left unpruned. Mission figs need sun, heat and minimal water in order to develop their best taste. Although they do not split badly, if the figs ripen during rainy periods without much sun, then my Mission figs lack sweetness and sour easily, even when planted in-ground. In optimal conditions, the fig is great; reliable, sweet with a strong fig taste and good for drying.

They can take a lot a lot a lot of water. Try a mild fertilizer such as fish emulsion, and a lot of water. Most plants though, slow down in August heat. A newly installed plant will slow down even more.

Your tree sounds normal to me. As long as your soil drains well your watering will be OK. I never give my figs any summer water and they do fine. With any new tree they will need water through the first summer. The Mission fig will need long hot summers to bear a good crop of ripe figs hopefully your location will provide that. Al
