Clematis- Armanii's blooms are brown

Can anyone tell me why my clematis armanii is not blooming...the vines are growing but not blooming. The buds turn brown. I have had some bloom for a day or two but then they die!!!!! BTW- they are in 5 gallon containers.

Maybe they are root bound!! Could you be overwatering??

Clemandis armandii is a spring bloomer. If it's making buds now, it's late and it'a probably too hot for the buds. Is it recently planted? sometimed they are greenhouse/temperature forced.

Just keep it watered and fertilized (organic rose and tomato food is the recommended fertilizer) (I use E.B. Stone organic tomato food or *Maxsea*) and it should bloom fine in spring (when it's supposed to bloom).

Jenn, there are a couple of evergreen group 1 types that stay green and a few that actually bloom in winter. I have one called C. cirrhosa 'Wisely Cream' that just finished blooming a few weeks ago. You may also have caused additional fertilizer burn by applying fertilizer. Mammal urine is very high concentrate nitrogen, a basic plant nutrient, and in its undiluted form can easily burn plant roots and tissue. Washing out the urine is the best solution as it both dilutes and leaches the nitrogen. For the future, if the vine survives, wrap the base of the plant in loosely crumpled chicken wire, making sure all the soil surface is covered. This is the easiest "cat deflector" for containerized plants, if not the most attractive, and requires no retreatment or application of dangerous chemicals.

I looked at my pot ghetto yesterday and Ville de Lyon, Durandii and Cezanne are blooming. All were dug up and potted due to construction on my house. Etoile Violette has a few blooms too. Due to construction, I was not able to prune, fertilize or water as much as I'd have liked this past summer. My garden overall looks like a word not allowed to be used on this message board.....:(

Why have the leaves on my Clematis turned brown?

Browning of the *lower* leaves seems to be a normal occurrence with some cultivars of clematis. It usually happens in the heat of the summer after blooming time. Current knowledge suggests there is little that can be done other than to make sure that the plant is well watered and has a thick layer of organic mulch around its base to conserve moisture. Just prune away the dead leaves and leave the vines alone. Many times the leaves can just be crushed and they will fall away. Another type of browning leaves happens when the plant, or part of the plant, has suffered from 'wilt' and that portion has died. In this case the brown leaves extend to the growing tip and the vine becomes very brittle, almost black, and the axil buds are also brown or black. It takes some experience to determine whether this portion is dead. If the tip is bent and it snaps off cleanly, it is dead. Prune this down to either a living branch, live leaf axil, or to the base. The plant may be dormant for a period, but if kept well watered and fed you should see new growth shoot either later the same year, or the following year.

Mine blooms in Feb and March. When it's done, I cut it back and new growth is coming on now.

Wanda- very interesting since they didn't bloom during the spring either. I will look into the fertilizers you mentioned. I picked up a bag at Home Depot called ColorBurst 15-15-15(I think). Anyhow- thank you very much for your input.

Kathi- You may be right! It makes sense that I am overwateting. If they are not suppose to be blooming now like Wanda mentioned, then they are not suppose to get that much water. I will definitely cut back. Thanks again, for the help.

Armandii is not a good choice for container growing. In one year it will completely fill a five gallon container with roots and be impossible to keep watered, let alone fertilized. Al

Maybe it's not C. armandi. Does it have thick, shiny leaves? Did you buy it in one of those little cardboard retail boxes? If so, there is a good chance that it's not what the label said.

I bought them in 5 and 1 gallon blk containers from a big nursery. I included a link for you to see an image of healthy C. Armandii. Some of my leaves are healthy and some are turning brown, not to mention nearly all of the buds are brown.

My Armanii is in a huge pot and has been doing well for 3-4 years, I prune after it blooms so I can control the growth.
I have a trellis in the pot to hold the vines. About a month ago I gave all mine a sprinkling of chicken manure and they have really shot up since.

It only blooms once a year.
