OT: Patio Container Jungle

Here are some photos I took tonight after I watered... of my Patio Container Jungle!

My newest favorite plant is the Stromanthe TrioStar (2nd pic)! I am nuts about variegated or colorful foliage! Some of the seedlings shown are from the traveling seedbox as well as some from my SS's last year. I have so enjoyed growing these! The camera flash whites out the front of the pics so don't think the plants are chlorotic! LOL!!!

I have my back porch full of containers.
My DH says I'm taking over his grill area. LOL

During the winter months when we don't spend anytime in the backyard, DH doesn't seem to mind the wintersown containers covering the patio, but when summer gets here, and he's back there using the grill, or his newest toy, the smoker, then he starts asking when the mess is going to be gone. Even though he grumbles about the containers and mess, he always helps with the big jobs, like pounding in the 8' T-posts for my tomato plants with a sledgehammer, or building the pergola, or picking up a truckload full of rocks for me to edge the beds with. OH, I get Annies Catalog but will have to go to her website and look for the tomato seedlings! I did order already from Wild Boar. I never been one to have any patience, I ordered the tomato seeds from Wild Boar Farms that I wanted. I read on their website that tomato seeds are good for ten years so I guess mine will be fine until I start them next spring! I ordered - Black And Brown Boar Red Boar Pink Boar Sweet Carneros Pink Pink Berkley Tie Dye I really have to start seeds next spring as I want to grow these. Plus there is another type of tomatoes that I want to grow and those are The New Dwarfs. I know plants of those will not be available locally so seeds it is. Hi everyone...haven't been by for a few years... Life talking too much time but I still have my seedlings. Look what I missed...Wow, Jack has a devine jungle. Devine is devine & Miniwhite is a delight. I am amazed at the growth habit & symmetry! Wonderful plants...very tempting but I am crowded w my own seedlings & waiting for some of them to bloom. Checked out Christina as that's my name...Great plant named after JJ's wife... Wish you all much sucess & enjoyment in your jungles. My only possible dwarf obtusa seedling which grows about 2 inches a year which is 5 years old 3 gal & 13 inches was 4 branch but I rooted one branch 2 years ago now in 2 gal & it is now 6 inches tall. So I have 2 now for insurance.

OK, I promised some pics once my patch got a bit more established. Plants are doing well after a rough start a month ago. A lot of them are reaching 3 feet now. I've had to stake just about all of them because they're getting a bit unwieldy. Wide angle views of the developing forest. As you can see, there's a tape fence, which kept the deer out pretty well, until a couple nights ago, when one got in and chomped on a few plants. Since then I added a second perimeter fence made with 3 levels of fishing line. I figured the deer would try to get thru, but when they encountered some resistance they couldn't see, then that would disturb them enough to avoid the patch. We'll see how it goes. It's like I have to build a high security prison to keep the tomatoes in and the deer out! A shot of the rows of the plants. I spaced them out at 4 foot intervals. There are 10 rows of 7 for the tomatoes, and there are a couple rows of various pepper plants on the back side. As you can see they are staked, some already have a couple because the plants developed in a V pattern of two main stalks. Those red cups are the cups the seedlings went into after outgrowing their peat pods indoors under the grow lights. I wrote the variety on the cup to identify it. I also have the patch mapped out on a speadsheet. I'm such a geek. A Watermelon beefsteak in the foreground and Aunt Ruby German Green in the back. Both plants have some huge leaves, the Watermelon has potato leaves. A Japanese Black Trifele, again with tater leaves Cherokee Purple Lemon Oxheart in fore, Pink Brandywine behind San Marzano Yellow Brandywine A Tomatillo plant, I've never seen one before. Very interesting plant, it's like a cross between a pepper and 'mater. OK, that's prob enough for now. As you can see I need to do a bit more weeding/hoeing, but it actually looks cleaner after I did some yesterday.

Luv I love varigated foliage also. I am in constant hunt for anything with beautiful foilage. Your patio jungle looks beautiful.

I also brought Stromanthe TrioStar. I saw it in a book 6 yrs ago and have always wanted it but could not find one when I saw this one in a huge pot I was jumping for joy. I am collecting colorful foilage for my sunroom for this winter to chase the blues away. LOL Are you going to bring your TrioStar in for the winter?

The pink vine and white vine are Mandevilla, the yellow one is Allamanda nerifolia. Hope your DH distracted you in a good way! LOL!
I do spend lots of time outside. The other night I was finishing mowing with a flashlight. That was not fun but I didn't want to have to mow the next day. I mow very slowly.

Oh Joyce did you have to mention mowing before I had my 1st cup a coffee? lol
High time for me to cut also. But in the mornings I water it to grow (just kidding only water the flowers) and in the evening I am still to beat from it lol

Man I am looking forward to cooler weather!! But the evenings do get better at times now and that is why I fertilized last night in the back and I only have the front left.

I hope you got a riding lawn mower Joyce!!!!? We need one of those miners hat lights...just strap in on our forehead and GO rofl

How does the stromanthe do in the house over winter? I thought they needed a lot of humidity. I've seen them used as ground covers in tropical areas. Stunning.

Dave I have been able to keep the plants that need a lot of humidity by putting them in the bathroom in the evening so they get the humidity from the showers and I have steam heat which is not as drying as forced air.

I will find out this winter.

I had bought a small Stromanthe TrioStar on Ebay a couple of months ago. It is growing in the house. It has only put out one new leaf so it is not an ideal situation although I mist it daily. I enjoy watching the leaves go up and down at various times during the day. I read an article about it. I need to figure out how I am going to over winter the two that are outside. I went nuts on Ginger this year so I will need to figure out what to do with the ones that don't go dormant. They are all in containers. I am just enchanted with this Stromanthe!
Lucy, I used to have one of those miners lights like you are talking about. I need to look for one as you ought to see me holding the flashlight between my legs or under my armpit while I am working on plants at night and my other hand is being used! LOL!!!

Joyce lol you are serious aren't you ha ha ha Actually my son has one too. He is a electrician and needs it when he crawls up in attics . Of course his looks a lot better then what I am picturing... lol I think if the neighbors see me with THAT...they are ready to call the cops on me ha ha ha

Very pretty. I just love patio gardens where you can sit outside and enjoy everything on these cooler nights.
