Madrones in Berkeley?

I've a moderate size(for Berkeley) downslope lot dominated by 4 90+yr old coast redwoods. They're pruned for view and sun so there is fairly adequate sunlight. I need a screen for the lower neighbor's fence and of course have that fine North Berkeley clay soil.

I've located a source for cutting grown A menziesii and am intrigued by an informal grouping of them as a screen. I've heard that madrones are exceptionally fussy. Any advice? Alternative native screening plants for partial shade?

Thanks
