I have started them just from cuttings. Take a few leaves off the end of the cutting. Bury the end, then just coil the length around in the pot. Before too long it should start growing from several different points. When mine gets to long to manage. I just cut it back to the pot edge. Then start several pots out of what I've cut off. thanks so much for your reply! i've read that some dip the strand in root powder....do you do this? also....exactly how wet do you keep the soil you are trying to grow the cuttings in? i know over watering is deadly for these plant....but if yer trying to establish roots i would think you'd need to water a bit more.....but not too much. how to regulate/discern this.....

These reproduce either by cuttings or from tubers (the little white ball-like things that form in time down the length of the growing vines).

I haven't done well w/ cuttings of this myself (have also heard/known of folks suggesting pegging down the cuttings as they're coiled in the pot (w/ bobby pins, papers clips, bits of pipe cleaners, etc.), to ensure contact btwn the leaf/root node & the mix.

I've had better luck cutting back a cutting that has a tuber on the end & planting the tuber in the mix.

I see you're leary of cutting back a long vine, but you'll have to if you want more of the plant. You could cut one vine w/ the tuber at its top, plant the tuber, just barely under the mix & then take a couple of cuttings from the rest of the vine. This way you only cut 1 vine but have benefit of having 2 or 3 pieces to try to root.

that's an excellent idea.....making one long strand do double or triple work.....as i said....i don't have many tubers on my plant and i'm wondering why this is......i haven't found anything correlating number of tubers w/ relative health or otherwise of these plants.

I'm guessing tubers are a function of age, I only had a couple of flowers on mine last year (grown indoors), yet this year I've got lots of tubers; I'm guessing after yours is done blooming, it may make more tubers.

I'm not sure how to control the moisture on these as you asked. I don't find this a problem as I use very fast draining soil & water it once a wk, maybe twice that in warmer months like summer. Perhaps, if you're nervous abt them drying out, rather than water more than once a wk (mine are in direct sun), you might mist the cuttings every couple of days.

Can't hurt to try the rooting hormone on the cuttings if you've got some lying around, I've done it both ways (RH works best if one dampens the stems 1st). On the cuttings, pls. make sure you plant them deeply enough for a node or 2 to be under the mix. Good luck!

thanks....i feel a bit better....maybe the plant won't produce tubers and flowers at the same time....mine has lots & lots of flowers but no 'new' tubers are apparent. maybe next year....

Have patience, the tubers will come! You can also just cut pieces that have about three sets of leaves, and cut just below a leaf junction, remove that set of leaves and dunk in rooting hormone. Keep just damp to the touch. Mine seem to root readily that way. A few months ago I purchased a variegated Ceropegia and took about a dozen cuttings this way. They all took, and are quite nice.

The tubers of my ceropegia sometimes shrivel up and become rubbery. Can anyone tell me why this is? Am I over/under-watering?

Sorry, I've not seen this, so I can't guess why; my tubers seem to stay nice & lump. Are your leaves shriveling up as well?

Maybe try to take those shriveling, rubbery tubers & plant them; can't hurt to try that.

hi I had a string of hearts long ago it was a small plant so I planted it in a 9 inch hanging pot and all I did to fill the the pot was, don't cut the vines off just stick the end in the soil and wait a few weeks until it starts to grow you will see the new little leaves then cut the vine off, and stick the end in again. it works. mine filled the pot and it grew to 6 feet long..and then it all died and I don't know why..I have not been able to find a new plant, but I am still looking.. by the way another way to start new plants if you can do it outside..set the pot on the ground and lay the vines on the ground and set something heavy (just heavy enough to keep the vines on the soil) they will root and then pot them up you can do this with lots of plants and shrubs just gently bend part to the ground and weight it down and let it root...have fun trying this....linda
