Here are a couple of beds that the Cows didn't have their way with.. the others sadly are still in recovery...LOL

The first pic is a negelected little baby I ran across today.. Could this be a Y or is it a branch? It is Aurea Wildform Yellow X Unknow pod 12 from Delisa Harvey

It looks like the cows didn't get all your goodies. It looks like you have a good many plants that are growing well despite the bovine intervention. lol I think that's probably a branch, at least I'd hope it is. A bud on something that size would probably kill it!

Just to let you know, I think my bull is just a butt head! The grass is greener on the other side, even though it is the same as he already has! He has learned how to pull the fence just so and then bend it over. Watched him. He does seem very intellegent. We have hog wire because of where we live. I know it won't totally keep unwanted critters out, but will deter them better, like alligators. I know they can climb. Now the barb wire going up on top and in the middle may surprise him. Hopefully after a few nicks he will back off.

Sammy, I'm taking it ez on the gardening although I have planted a few roses. I finally got my first gallica, Belle sans Flatterie. I planted a couple of climbers, well five anyway. I can't figure out what kind of look the front yard needs. If I had my way I'd plop what I wanted where I wanted with the idea of creating a thicket that pleased me. Carla, I left out the part about sitting on the couch eating pie when I suddenly realized there was sour cream in the fridge. It was all over then. Hopeless. Morz and Diane: regarding the Mayan--it has cinnamon and fudge swirls in it. I'm a chocoholic and it takes a lot to impress me. I took one bite and knew it was special. Patrick, it's been a long time since I fried a chicken; it sounds like it was over the top. There's nothing like a flour gravy when it's done right; it's so simple and so easy to mess up but so good when it's right. I usually stick to frying pork chops and I haven't even done that in eons. Yes, I'd also like to know which catalogue has those cabana boys! I'm exhausted, especially with all the watering, and the summer is not over yet. However more has worked than hasn't so I can't complain. My new roses are a joy! After months of indecision whether to buy roses I had decided they would be too much trouble to do this year when we are renovating the old beds. However on a trip to the city at the end of June one of the 'good' nurseries had them on sale so I bot 5 in large pots. Of course that necessitated making a new bed for them which was an enormous job. They have looked good from the start and I left a few blooms on them initially but then deadheaded seriously. They are now reblooming despite the hot dry weather we have been having. Of course I'm watering frequently and they seem to like frequent drinks of diluted alfalfa tea. I'm still concerned the deer might find them but we made the bed next to the house in the dog's large grassy yard so perhaps that will deter them. I'm soon going to move some of my lavender plants there as extra insurance. I know they are not necessarily easy plants and I'll have to mulch heavily in the fall but they are very pretty. The lilies I planted last year are blooming profusely, multiplying, and looking fantastic. I'm pleased with my new shade garden altho it's only had superficial weeding and needs a thorough one. Coming up on the to-do list - I've just been grabbing weeds that are blooming or threatening to take over as I hand water. I thot it might be too dry with the large trees taking all the moisture but with amending and occasional watering it's doing fine. Love all the heuchera and will buy more. I love my potted annuals, they've been a real pleasure when some parts of my garden have looked so 'destroyed' during this renovation process. Even in this heat they are still looking great with daily watering and frequent deadheading and fertilizing. I'm quite disappointed in the nursery that planted the azalea I bot. I thot the roots looked fine when I planted it but it didn't do well so I dug it up and there were a lot of wood chips in the center of the root ball! So I hosed the roots clean, planted it in good soil, and after frequent watering it's coming back. All of the other new plants have done really well. I'm not very happy with one of the new beds further out as I haven't spent enough time on it. Probably shouldn't have made it this year but it will survive. It has all deer resistant establish perennials I moved from my main garden so I didn't think I needed to baby it too much. The spirea looked as if it had died but is finally coming back. It really needed more water than I gave it. I've had a problem with too much direct sun in parts of my garden since we had some large trees removed and some of the Lady's Mantle have not done as well as usual. So I'm moving the young ones to semi-shaded areas and discarding the others. Just part of the evolution of a garden one has to adjust to. I'm disappointed I may have few sunflowers this year. We usually have lots as the birds are messy eaters and seed them all over. We usually transplant some to better locations. However there were very few coming up so I planted some and the chipmunks dug them up and ate the seed! I planted more and kept them indoors til they were a few inches tall. Put them out and those little !@#$% ate all except for the red flowering ones. So I have them in larger pots but not sure whether they will flower as were planted late with all the tomfoolery! The thistles the birds seeded around the feeder did extremely well!!! LOL This morning I thoroughly weeded and mulched so that bed looks nice again! Wonder how long it will last. I don't usually get thistles in my garden but there must be some type of bird that eats them in the wild and deposits them here.

I know. I'm about to figure out how to tackle the digging issue. We also don't want him to ever try to dig under the fence, so it's kind of a safety issue. Maybe bitter apple spray will help. I'm going to get some because when I said I had him trained off the pot ghetto... well I was wrong. Have chased him around the yard to retrieve several new broms lately, the ones I potted up to get them to root well, and wait out his terror stage, because he was pulling them up out of the yard because they weren't well-rooted and easy to grab. And thorns? He doesn't care. I've got broms that rip me to shreds, but only after I've managed to catch him and pry them out of his mouth. What he doesn't seem to like is tomato cages, steers clear of them... so I'm thinking about buying a couple more to shield new plants, just moving them around the yard as I put things in to let them get rooted. For a couple bucks, that might be a solution to a lot of things for me. That said, the much more attractive bamboo teepees have suffered recently. He doesn't steer clear of them. Ugh.

I see you have a Siam Ruby banana too! I've got two -- one in the ground and one in a pot. I'm seeing which one will do better. So far the one in the ground is winning.

Hey Dave ..I got my Siam a couple of yr's ago . It pups faily easy ..Is yours on the red side or more variegated? I would love to get one of the ones where the leaves are 50~50..

The Siam Rubys are still a bit young. The one in the pot seems to be more solid red. The one in the ground has the red/lime green going on. It's really incredible! They're both starting to pup.

Kylie& Dave, How exactly do you remove the banana pups? I have a dwarf cavendish with 3 pups.Is there a wrong time? I'm afraid to kill them.

Very nice Dave!! I love the variegation on that one.. Mine rarely get much green...

Theresa.. How big are the pups? They need to be large enough to have a root system to get them going once removed... Are they in the ground or pot?

Theresa, I usually wait until pups are over 2 feet to separate. The larger they are, the better your chances of a successful transplant. Wash away some of the soil around the pup to get a better sense of its architecture. Some pups arise close to the mother; others a distance away. When you cut, use a sharpshooter spade and angle it in toward the mother corm. If you go straight down, sometimes you'll sever the stem from its rhizome and won't get any roots. Then you'll lose the pup...although it may come back from the rhizome.

If the pup has no roots yet, at least you could get some of the mother corm with it. Then it should generate roots.

I love all your nanners, I'm so glad the cows didn't get them all.

I am having a hard time deciding it that is a Y or branch on that brug seedling from the photo- but it does sort of look like a Y. Some people have been getting Ys that short. I had a few seedlings that did hat this spring (they were definitely Y'd) none made flowers that small though: One side of the Y sort of outgrew the other and the smaller side sort of died back while the larger continued thier normal growth. Mine were in pots though, so maybe yours will do something different in the ground :)

Thank you dave_in_nova for the explaination! We have taken the smaller pups without roots and put them in tree sleeves, put them on the north side of the house and gotten several to root that way. I agree putting them into the ground is the best way to go. We have several and just got our second Red one. We are going to be sinking them both into the ground in buckets like we would do the brugmansias but have to move the towers w/clemmies first.
chena, wishing you the best with what the cow's eat. Hoping they all come back from the roots. Did the cows deposit some fertilizer while they were out?

Why YES Ms Karma ..they always do.. Not that there is a shortage around here...LOL Some of the plants are starting to recover .. They snacked about 8 Banana's down some to the ground and they are taking a bit to put on new growth so everything pretty much looks like..
well that fertilizer they left behind...LOL
Lenette it had been in a pot and kind of got kicked to the side.. I figured it had a better chance in the ground..It is a nice fertile somewhat shady spotcome afternoon..

Your plants look great. They must have like the extra fertilizer you gave them, lol. Maybe I need you to haul me a load of it down here, lol. I can't get my banana to grow. Should it be sprouting by now? I have been keeping it moist and in full sun and planted it in topsoil mixted with composted manure and perlite. What did I do wrong...boo hooo. The iochroma bloomed though but did it while I was gone so I didn't get any pics dangit.

Ewe, you can keep that one. Hubby found a ghecko in his coffee cup this morning. I'm glad he had only poured in the cream and sugar and not the coffee before he saw him, lol. I have no idea how it got in there but about gave me a heart attack. I'll check the banana tomorrow and make sure its still firm. Thanks. I'll try and get your box out tomorrow.
