Plano MG???? I have a couple of Brugs that are fighting mites and losing leaves.. This is the first yr I have used a chemical fertilizer.. I'm not able to get out and haul compost right now... I am using MG and Bayer Rose fertilizer on them but haven't seem any damage becoz of it...

I used Miracle Grow with a higher middle number on my brugs every week. Sunday is feeding day at the brug zoo.:) I have noticed no ill effects this year at all.

One year I did have some yellowing of the leaves, and then I gave them some epsom salts ( a handful to 2 gallons of water), which cleared up the problem right away.

Plain ol MG  diluted - is working for me. I was using tomato food on them  but full strength (according to package) and they looked AWFUL  plus other things I was battling.

IÂm down to just compost on some (nothing else)  flushing others (cleaning soil) - and on the regulars - diluted MG 20-20-20, the one that has all the other stuff in it, or the 18-24-??  but either one, I use diluted  about half of the recommended strength  and never when the soil is bone dry. . .the few I'm using it on seem to accept that now - and I keep the soil moist  not soggy.

I don't do the "foliar" feeding - I've had too many problems. Soil only.

Thanks to all for responding. I've been using the epsom salts and the Bayer systemic along with vit. B1 and Super Thrive on a regular basis. Don't seem to have an insect problem and everything was going along well until I used the MG on some of the plants. The collapse was immediate. I mean within a few days they looked liked they were struggling. I now have 2 Brugs that are sending up tiny shoots, the gardenias have green stems, but no new leaf sprouts, and the rest of the Brugs are dead. Am heartbroken since most of these were nursed thru our freeze and had good roots and leaves and some were even sending out one or two blooms. I guess I'll just have to start over again. For those of you who might have extra cuttings for sale this year please add me to your list as I don't think I'll have much to trade. But will see how well the Brugs I have left will do. Oh Gloria, how heartbreaking! But don't throw in the towel on those 'dead' brugs. I called Karchesky canna a couple of months back to see what brugs they had in stock because I had lost my Ecuador Pink over the winter. I ended up speaking with Alice Harris who told me to keep watering it, just incase. I am so glad that I did! Now this poor thing is nothing but a big stick, a dried out stick whose bark is falling off. Last week I noticed something breaking the soil, I thought it was a wayward weed but did not pull it. This weekend the leaves are fully extended and it is regrowth. I did a happy dance across the patio!

This is my first time ever growing brugs and I have used nothing but MG mixed to the recipe on the container.I have been using the MG 2 times a week and I have had not problems at all. Are your brugs in pots sunk into the soil? Maybe they are not draining well and are sitting in wet soil. That's not good. I am tending to think this may be the problem. I know this is my first year, but I have read everything on the market and every post on here and that is my inexpert opinion.

The best thing I ever did was to buy a water meter thingie. I insert it way down where I think the roots should be and that's the reading I use before I water. Keep us posted please. I will have brugs to spare this coming year - yellow ones.

Gloria I'm sorry to hear about your brugs. Are you sure the underground portion is dead? You might want to unpot them, wash off the soil and see if the base of the stem and roots are still alive. If they are I'd pot them in new soil, give a dose of B1 and ST and see if they regrow. I should have plenty of cuttings in the fall that I'd be happy to send to you for postage.

Hi, Sorry to hear about your brugs. That's wierd about the MG. I use it all the time. The only time I had a problem was when the plants were really dry and I didn't water them and wait long enough for the plants roots to absorb water before fertilizing. They can collapse exactly as you said when that happens. I killed a favorite rose bush that way. I
had a problem with fish fertilizer (says it doesn't burn plants) that I bought on sale at Lowe's this year. I have used that brand on lots of things in the past, especially bananas~they love it! However, this time I really think the fertilizer was bad because it burned them sooo bad. It was the only thing I used on them at the time and they were well watered. I used way less than it said on the bottle too. I know fertilizers can have expiration dates but this one didn't have one marked on the package. Guess I know why it was on sale lol.
Brugs are pretty tough so maybe there is a chance for them to resprout. I have had some of mine a little over 6 years and have done some hideous things to them along the way. I have lost a few but most of them recover.

Hi Lynn: Yes, some of these "sticks" seem firm in the soil, so I'll wait and see if they resprout. Most of the rest pulled out of the pots easily and had totally dead roots.

Set the pots off in the shade and keep a little moist. Brugs have a way of coming back from the dead. I use milgonite in the heat of the summer. I do need to give mine a shot of their regular mix because of the heavy rains I am sure washed all of it away through the sand, but it is just to hot.

I have plants to spare if you want to risk shipping in the heat. I also will have a few super grimaldi cuttings in the fall. Monster plants that never stop blooming. You might have to shoot these to kill them. The saying goes only 2 types of plants in S. Texas those that take over and those that die. There is a lot of truth to this.

Oh gee8ch  I am so sorry  and I understand about heart broken. YouÂre right, theyÂre family at a certain point.

But Jim has a great idea - put them in the shade and just water. I received some bare root stock  on sale  in July - they looked dead, I was frightened. Nope  stuck them in those pots in the other picture (the grimaldi, Dr. Seuss, etc.) and boom. . theyÂre growing. The supplier knew what he was doing.

Sultry is right, my banana loves the fish emulsion  but I didnÂt go near the brugs with it. I hurt some plants a few years back with MG when the soil was bone dry  I gave full strength MG not paying attention and burned their roots. But immediately flushed the soil and only lost one of those plants (monstera?).

Water  hold on to them. . .donÂt give up the ghost yet. IÂm just hoping yours bounce back. IÂm flushing a couple of plants myself because I think I polluted the soil. There isnÂt anyone that has screwed up their brugs more than me this year.

Mean time  If youÂre sure theyÂre gone - LogeeÂs ships wonderful plants  even in the heat if you want to start over. They have Fed-X. Valley Grow sent large stock, bare root, if you wanted to jump start. . . .boy I wish I didnÂt have a problem  otherwise, IÂd try to send you some of my plain janes.

Hi Everyone,
I am sooo glad I found this post!
I also used MG on my white brug it is several years old
and about five ft. tall and it does just fine with it, but
the day I watered it with the MG I also watered a rooted
cutting I bought from Ebay and it started looking bad so I
repotted it in fresh soil and waited, it still looked bad
so after reading the post I took it out of the pot and sure
enough the roots were rotted, I cut it off and now have it
in water to make new roots, Im just thankful I could
salvadge it before it was to late.
