New to Brugs

I got my first Brug last summer a varigated plant called peach parfait. It grew and had some buggy issues last summer but no blooms. I put the pot in my basement for the winter and one day while doing the laundry I noticed a heavenly scent...low and behold my brug had 4 blooms!!! in November. It went dormant and when I put it out this spring it was a tall stalk with Y and a few leaves like rabbit ears on top. I repotted it and gave it some slow release. Got lots of leaf growth all over top and little leaves up the stem, it has also formed a major shoot from the bottom of the main stalk. Should I prune these leaves and stalks off?? The top of the olant is well branched and has just begun to form buds! lots and lots of them!!!! I can't wait to see it in full bloom. If I can figure out how I'll add a picture.

IÂm so happy for you with your Brug. I had 3 in No Cal Â and now I have 20 (plus 3 at my parentÂs place that my dad decided he wanted.)

I wanted Brugs again here in Illinois to keep me "calm" since IÂm about to undergo more major construction Â ripping out my driveway Â new garage Â ripping out sidewalks, etc.

TheyÂre wonderful plants Â they respond fast to both loving care AND my mistakes. (grin) I look forward to your pictures!

Hey Sianna...Congrats on your Brug.. What a great suprise to find in the winter!!! I havn't seen a Peach Parfait before ..Sounds Beautiful!!!I would love for you to get your pics up...

It won't hurt anything if they do scorch. They will just look ugly and fall off anyway, lol. Put it in shade for a day or two then slowly move under a tree in dappled shade for a few days then you can try a little more sun. Some of them can't handle full sun but the deep green fuzzy large leaved ones love it and grow like crazy. The thinner leaved ones need some afternoon protection in our heat at least. I would give them some superthrive and a little epsom salt mixed with water. I need to do the same to mine. Some are looking pale. I use miracle grow potting soil and it works fine. I add perlite if I have it. If not make sure you have good drain holes. You can bury it if you like or leave it as is. You may have to water more if its exposed. Good luck. Don't move them up to too large a pot at a time. Let the roots fill in first then move up a size or two. I jumped one up by too many sizes and its still the same size it was last year, lol.

Yes, sounds like insect damage. Check for green worms, they love tender new growth, but some will roll and dimple the leaves. Pick them off.

I'm in Galveston, I cut them off, pull off all the leaves and shove them into a pot full of Scots or miracle gro, water well, stick them by the back porch and they get watered with everything else or if they look wilted. 100% success rate. With our climate and the humidity it's much easier than everyone else. It's not supposed to get really cold yet, this next cold front will only get into 40's way north, if your in town it'll be warmer, 60's on the island, then it's going to warm up again. I have no luck rooting in water, they rot no matter what I do. And in soil I don't have to worry about changing water or the dog drinking the water. If yours don't make it let me know, I've got 20 or so rooted & growing by the back porch that need to be planted somewhere. I can meet you or if you come down to the island you can buzz by & pick up all you want. Along with anything else you'd like cuttings or divisions of. Tally HO!

You didn't mention how tall your main orginal stem is. Do you want to grow it into a tree or a keep it as a shrub. If you original stem isn't tall enough for a tree and has already Y'd then I would just let it be, as a shrub, not cutting off the bottom new stalk. If it is tall enough to be a tree or even if you would like a short patio type tree then just prune off all the major new branches under your Y. You could use that new stalk (if it is nice and straight) to start a new tree as well, if that is what you are after :)

Thanks so much, the plant is about 4 feet tall and seems to me would do best as a tree so I'll prune the shoot at the bottom and pot it up. It also has lots of little leaves and shoots up the main trunk that I think I,ll prune as soon as they get bigger so I should have some to trade.

That is a nice little tree! I see what you mean. The other sucker looks nice and straight also with some nice variegation in it. Hopefully it won't be too hard to root. Gonna be purty though. Is that mint you have in your pot? I grow chocolate mint under lots of my potted plants~ when it gets too rowdy, I just pull some out lol. Gotta have it for those mojitos :)

Ok so she is blooming like mad, they opened a pure white and are just beginning to turn to the peach that I saw in the basement last winter. Unfortunatly I'll be away for 5 days and afraid I'll miss the full effect. But hope they will hold on for me. I have staked the tree and tied it to the rail of the deck as it blew over the other day. Here is a pic ( I hope)

That is a lovely plant! A variegated! I've never tried one of those.

Are they more difficult than a regular Brug Â i.e. are they more sensitive to sun than others?

She sure looks very happy!
