Butterfly Garden

omg....he was beautiful...what is he?

Hi Y'all, I am on this forum only because the Garden Junk gang sent me here to post a teapot I got. I know NOTHING about butterflies. I am a long way away from having my property established. I was over there today picking tomatoes and saw this BEAUTY on the leaf of a tomato plant. Maybe y'all could tell me what he was. I did not have a camera, unfortunately. Here is the descrip:

Think he was a "moth" because when I touched him, he was powdery like a moth (Please pardon me if I am extremely ignorant, like I said, I know NOTHING about buterflies!)

His body was yellow, his feet and legs were bubble gum pink, and his wings were pink, yellow, pink, all the same color pink and yellow as his body and feet. He was rather little with short fat wings.

HTH and that you can tell me what he was and is he good or bad for my plants. He sure is good for my eyes!!!!

Yay...that's it...so beautiful...I will do some research, but real quick, are they a benefit to my garden or harmful?

Steve; I'm so sorry! What a loss! Birds are so beautiful! What types of birds DO you have where you live? Are you near woods or a park where you can birdwatch some? I noticed you're in MD---One of my DSsIL grew up on a dairy farm in Bel Aire years ago. He took us to Havre De Grace a couple of times to see the lighthouse... MD always had some mighty pretty country! I don't know what Annapolis is like these days, but a dealer friend of ours used to go up a lot for used Mercedes from Benson's----what a lovely town it was!!! (20 yrs. ago!) Sometimes my kids, my future SIL, the whole pack of us would be caravaning back to Va. in five or six of those wonderful old Benz diesels! Those were the days! I guess the only thing that really stands out in my mind about folks from MD is, most of them are pretty daggone smart ---and they LOVE to ride the left lane no matter WHAT state they're in! GUFFAW!

Congratulations to you and your family MeMo, and a big welcome to Caleb James!!! Great name too, very nice ring to it and he is adorable. Great family pix, each and every one. Your lil cowpokes are BOTH so handsome (meaning baby cowpoke Caleb and big lil pokey one Ethan) and daughters both so very lovely (your older daughter reminds me of my daughter), and you look so happy and full of love holding your new grand son, MeMo! Congrats to you all, Love! I'll never forget the day DH was awarded custody after a 1.5 year battle- just a total sense of disbelief, relief, shock . . .and even a little fear. Saying that, and not meaning to rain at all on your parade, I want to offer warning. Be very careful of the way mom is going to spin this to SS. My SD's mom told her things like we were stealing her, she'd never see mom again, etc. She told SD that is she told anyone about the things that happened there they would take mommy away and so on. We were very lucky that when we told SD that wasn't true she believed us and didn't act out, but I know we were lucky. Be aware of SS's moods and such for a little - look for clues that he might be getting bad info. Celebrate tonight!!

Vee - I remember when I read Life of Pi and thoroughly enjoyed it, although I do remember that you have to be in the right kind of mood... :-) After searching my stacks of TBR for a new NF to read, came across "We are at War: The Diaries of Five Ordinary People in Extraordinary Times" by Simon Garfield. More along the lines of "Nella Last's War" in that this book follows the diary excerpts from five ordinary people during the beginning of WWII. And they weren't kidding when they describe the people as "ordinary" - it is teetering on "rather boring in places" which, I suppose, is to be expected when you consider the "ordinary" people who play a starring role. Not as entertaining as the Nella diaries, I will give this a few more chapters and then see if things improve. This book is more about the Mass Observation Project during WWII...

The caterpillars of this moth eat the leaves of maple trees, occasionally oak leaves, and since we have so many wild red maple trees in the woods, I doubt they're harming anything you don't want chewed. Even if you have a prized maple in your front yard, the tree would recover from any leaf damage they might do - they're not tent caterpillars. As adults, they do no damage to anything at all.

Thank you Misssherry....On the subject of catepillars, I have many pecans, all of which are infested with catepillar nests, do you have any info on that? No other trees in the yard have nests, just the pecans.

That sounds like the tent caterpillars that all pecans get. I don't know what you can do about them. In the old days, they'd take a torch and burn them out! If you live in the country, the cuckoos are probably eating them without you knowing it, if you live in town, you wouldn't have that advantage. You'll have to either leave them, or, if you can't tolerate them, call your county extension service/county agent to get his recommendation.
